Violence on your screen in all kinds of cheerful colors. The Spanish indie developer Finalboss Games knows how to do this and shows this with great dedication in Vesta. Made by only five people you can read in this Vesta review what fun game this is for the Switch!

I say the Switch anyway, because that's because i tested the game on that platform. The game is also on the digital shelves of PlayStation Store and can be found on Steam. In Vesta you take on the role of two characters: the six-year-old girl Vesta and her robot: BOT. Together you are going to a brave adventure in 36 levels, divided into four chapters.

Cheerful style

What immediately catches the eye, are the joyous over the top colors and the comic style with which the story is presented. A good sign, because the game immediately catches your attention! Although it is a bit the principle of a clown who laughs behind his tears, because Vesta lives in an underground maze, in a rather lonely world. Here are not cozy people part of the decor, but enemies that have to be fought.

And there comes the power of the gameplay around the corner. Because fighting is done in a special way. Vesta itself is far too small (and cute) to beat various robots short and small. You will not do that either. The little lady walks around with a technical device that she can use to get the energy from certain sources, which is necessary to advance in a puzzling way. That creates a lot of puzzles and the link with Zelda is fast!

Think carefully!

In the beginning it is not that difficult; you empty one place, as it were, and the energy in another device stops to move on and open a door that way. But soon the device expands so that you can carry three of those energy sources at the same time. And then you have to think about when you carry which bag, and how!

In the meantime, you have to work with your best friend. He can shoot at enemies. You can change the character by simply pressing X once. And you can also extract the energy of enemies. So, for example, a puzzle can be solved as follows: you take control of BOT and shoot a robot. It is temporarily paralyzed, you change with X of doll, and deprives all its energy with Vesta. Note that this must be done within a certain time. Because the enemy does not make the ticket through BOT, which is only paralyzed for seconds.

Strategic

In addition, you have to look at the occasional strategy that makes the game attractive. Because where do you put Vesta down when you start shooting with BOT? One bang for her head by an enemy and she is dead and then you can start again at a checkpoint. Thinking in advance is therefore an advantage. In itself, the changing between the characters works smoothly, although there are occasional parts where the game is just not completely flawlessly programmed.

If BOT wants to push a few boxes aside, which are too heavy for Vesta, then you can easily end up in the abyss because you were a few inches wrong. Compare it to the clumsy bugs that LEGO games occasionally have. Then you start again and then (thankfully) do it well. In terms of save points, the game is fortunate enough.

Switching is irritating

What is also a shame, are the times when you always have to switch character to come to a certain point together. For example, once you have activated a platform and you have to go from point a to b, you have to get both characters there. So you first have to go with BOT, switch with X and then with Vesta. Even if you reach a checkpoint, you must both stand there. Sometimes that is annoying, because you would think that if you have brought one, that is enough to continue with the game. But unfortunately.

Incidentally, it is striking that the game focuses on two characters, but you can not play the game yourself under any circumstances. Co-op is totally absent and that is a missed opportunity. Because when you play the game you always think: you have to put this together!

This does not alter the fact that you will enjoy Vesta for 36 levels with a level of difficulty that slowly goes up and end bosses to beat at the end of a chapter. Working together between the two characters makes the game delicious. A little girl who needs to have her brain and cleverly places the powers in the right place, a fat, lumbering robot that needs to have it. It works. And literally power: because often you can not get to a certain place. Wrong thought. You can always lift with BOT Vesta and throw her to the next spot.

Conclusion

If you have a Switch in-house (or PlayStation 4), then you have to think of one thing very well: a game does not always have to have a box around it to be fun. For a soft price of less than 20 euros you get a great platformer in the house, where you can regularly crack your brain. And just when you think you're getting frustrated, you'll be cheered up by the cheerful color palette of this, nevertheless, special game.

Pros

➕ The plus and minus points
➕ Delicious sci-fi sauce
➕ Good value for money
➕ Control over two fun characters

Cons

➖ No co-op
➖ Occasionally annoying bug
