Two years ago, after years of absence, a new Digimon game appeared in the West, in the form of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth. This game was received fairly positively and this gave publisher Bandai Namco sufficient reason to come up with a sequel. Does this continuation also have the same impression as its predecessor, or is the sequel perhaps even better? You're going to find out now!

Slow start

A penible point from the first part was the slow start that the game knew. For the first three hours you were mainly looking at cut scenes and a whole story was immediately thrown at your head. That was perhaps too much of a good thing, because it took a long time before you could really start playing. After there was the option to import your savegame from the previous part at the beginning of this second part, there was the hope that this second part would start a bit faster, but unfortunately.

First you will be rewarded as a returning player with a few items, and then again for a long time to watch cut scenes, in which you are introduced to the new characters in the new story. In my view it is quite unnecessary to have to learn for a second time what a Digimon is, how a Digivice works and what the practical use of the world is called EDEN. However, the game is set up in such a way that playing the first part is not necessary to understand the second part.

Back to EDEN

'Never change a winning team' is a common term in the sports world. Bandai Namco, however, took this expression very literally, because in terms of look & feel Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker's Memory is an exact copy of its predecessor. Well there are many games in which this is experienced as annoying, but this is absolutely not the case with this game. Precisely because it is so recognizable, I immediately got the feeling that I had two years back, namely the feeling of 'welcome back'.

This time you step into the skin of a new character called Keisuke. His EDEN account details have been stolen in a major phishing scandal, after which he is accused of a crime he has not committed. This makes Keisuke join a hacker group called 'Hudie', to find out who stole his identity and to get it back. To fight evil with evil is the only solution.

During your quest you will return to many locations from the first part, which is supplemented with many new locations. In addition, you will encounter enough familiar faces again and there are subtle references to the previous story. If you have imported your savegame from the previous section, you will also receive all the information about the Digimon you have already encountered at the beginning of the game. In addition, more than 80 new Digimon have been added to this game, which greatly increases the roster of samples.

The venom in the tail

Once the driver is over at the start, the game can finally start. Just like in the first part, this game is divided over many chapters, in which you play story missions and also solve issues for people in need. As a result, you always switch between the Japanese world and the Digital World to train with your own Digimon. You can bet a maximum of three at once and by going back and forth Digivolven you have the freedom to eventually create your favorite monsters.

Most of the battles that you face are not too difficult, but appearances are often deceptive in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker's Memory. It may well be that you have defeated some opponents with a few simple one-hit KOs, and then you have to cross your mouth against a far too strong last opponent. It is therefore recommended to train and grind a lot, to also master these last bosses.

Is there something new?

What has to be clear is that you can not expect any innovative delights from this new Digimon adventure. In addition to the addition of a total of 87 new Digimon, a new story and new locations, little else has been added. However, a new type of fighting system has been implemented, in which you run across a kind of chess game with a few supporters, against multiple enemies. In turn, you take steps and if you can 'hit' someone, you take on the fight and everyone can attack once. Subsequently, points are accumulated here and those who are the first 30, win the fight. Necessary addition? Not really.

Hellup!

This second Cyber Sleuth game is again packed with cut scenes and dialogues to fill the game. Sometimes this is too much of a good thing and then you suddenly click through too quickly, so that you have missed critical information about the continuation of a mission. In story missions, however, it is not possible to find out what exactly you need to do, so that you randomly go all out once again in the hope of finding the right location with an objective. That is quite awkward, because it hinders the game tempo. A somewhat clearer indication of your goals would not have been out of place.

Conclusion

For the fans of the first part, there is again a new game ready that guarantees dozens of hours of gameplay. A new story with new characters and a lot of new Digimon have been added to the game. The game is in all other areas an exact copy of the first part, but that is not necessarily a big problem. After another slow start you will be completely sucked into the game to grind, puzzle and discover. Sometimes you get lost for a while, but after a detour, you automatically end up on the right path again. Apart from the criticism this new adventure is fine and for me - as a Digimon enthusiast - I am far from finished with this game.

Pros

➕ Dozens of hours of gameplay
➕ Added a lot of new Digimon
➕ Grinding & training & puzzling
➕ Returning player is rewarded

Cons

➖ No innovation
➖ Very slow start
➖ A lot of cut scenes
➖ Purpose of the mission sometimes lost
