Injustice 2 Review: A little weird great fighter - Excellent steering, reasonable modes, bizarre lootboxes

Fortunately, this year the PC version was released, because despite some strange decisions, Neatherrealm Studios once again manages to set up an excellent fighting game.

Blessed are the developers who always make the same kind of game; their titles are getting better. Take From Software, for example, who finally came up with Dark Souls after seven titles . Or Midway / Neatherrealm Studios with their endless series of Mortal Kombats .

The latter yielded Injustice 2 , a game that perhaps has the best control in the series. I can not put my finger on how it comes, but this time the movements came much smoother from my hands than normal. The characters did not feel like a block of concrete, as at other times.

Each character has its own movements, Super Moves and a special power. The field is full of objects that you can throw at the opponent and there is the Clash where you can bet a part of your meter for extra damage or life.

The story also follows the familiar (but excellent) formula. The wrong Superman is behind bars, but now Braniac threatens to add the Earth to his collection. Of course, the heroes must stop him. Or do they still need help...?

Just like in Mortal Kombat 9 and Injustice, you follow one or more characters in their mission to save the world - and in which they strike different opponents. That 'multiple' is indeed the only new one. Fortunately, because you do not have to play with a character that you absolutely do not.

After the story it is time for Multiverse mode. These are daily or (semi) weekly challenges in which you tackle missions with a bonus or a handicap. Unfortunately, this one can not match the crazy Challenge Tower of MK9. No exploding limbs is a bit lame, maybe the makers were not too crazy about DC?

What we do get is Gears: garments for your superheroes and supervillains that also contain upgrades. You earn this by clearing the many challenges in the game or by buying Motherboxes with money. Indeed, Injustice 2 also has lootboxes.

This is the moment when many gamers start to hyperventilate. Not necessary, although reality turns out to be a bit weirder. Injustice 2 has four types of money - and there is only one that you can buy with real money. With that you only purchase cosmetics, such as shaders and extra skins. No gears.

You do not need to decorate your favorite character with upgrades to make a chance online. Each mode has two options: play with upgrades or purely with your skills. In other words: Injustice is not pay-to-win ab-so-lute, but it is unclear why these microtransactions are involved.

Fortunately, veterans do not have to worry about this. The servers seem to be online so far and if we can believe Steamspy the community is still growing. The developer continues to come up with new content - and that remains the most important for many fighters.

That makes Injustice 2 a bit of a strange fighter. In terms of control it can measure itself with the best, it is only the modes that disappoint somewhat and the microtransactions that simply feel superfluous. Not that we complain about the latter, but it is bizarre. Despite everything: recommended.
