Game Review: Ruiner Review - Ghost in the Hell
Ruiner does not wind up his inspiration sources. The cyberpunk world could easily be from an anime like Akira or Ghost in the Shell.
In high tech city Rengkok, people live in dire conditions under the wars of companies that have every aspect of daily life. As a player you have control over a mysterious figure called by its dark leaders Puppy. The sweet box name is in violation of the acts that Puppy performs.
The style of Ruiner is overwhelming in raids. In the first mission, the goal flashes all the time through the screen: KILL BOSS. It's somewhat confusing and maybe it's a bit thick on top, but Ruiner knows his techno-misery like no-one else to sell. Combined with the infinitely long factory halls, monstrous processing machines and healthy red neon lighting, there is really nothing to be said about the atmosphere. That's pretty, because so much is the story at last not at all. Ruiner is the vision of the future that you absolutely do not want to make, but you can not get enough of it.
Burning eyes
The gameplay speaks a little less to the imagination. Puppy is mainly a murderer that runs from one arena to another, to barely barely human opponents. That goes to the rules of a solid twin-stick shooter in which stopping is not an option. Those who do not constantly catch new firearms or evade enemy bullets are ruthlessly slaughtered. Ruiner is proud of his own high level of difficulty. If the game really goes loose, you are guaranteed with sweating hands and burning eyes for the screen.
Sneuvelen and try again soon and fortunately, there is a great arsenal of special skills to make life even more boring. Shields, additional health, a faster dash or the ability to delay time are among the extra possibilities. The points needed to invest in these optional forces can be re-exchanged for any other strength at any time. In this way, Puppy's skills for each fight are adapted.
Ruined
To get out of Ruiner, you have to change a lot between all the powers until you find the right composition. Ruiner's centerpiece is thus difficult for devils. At least, until you have enough points to slow down almost infinitely, and teach each enemy in slow motion.
Only then can we see how monotonous Ruiner's fights collide. Rarely are the arenas or combinations of enemies used in creative ways, just too often it feels like work. The waves of new opponents keep coming, and sometimes it's very difficult to see what makes you so bad. It is therefore difficult for Ruiner, but certainly not fair.
Due to the lack of variation in the battles, the slurry comes in quite a while. It is therefore extra pity that so little has been done with the rest of Ruiner. After each mission, Puppy returns to a hub world in which he can perform missions for all kinds of characteristic characters. In addition, it is time to talk with the other clever figures living in Rengkok. You can not get immense freedom, but the traces of daily life in this city that you are gaining at this moment are actually more interesting than the predictable fights and the least predictable main story.
Ruiner is available for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for 19.99 euros.
Conclusion
Ruiner has a pumping soundtrack and terrible action, but in the field of gameplay, the game does not know anything to surprise. The setting tastes more and the humor is deliciously black, but combined with predictable and repetitive game elements, Ruiner does not look as good as promising the liked style.
Thanks for your time.
