What do you get when you combine Minecraft with a JRPG? Dragon Quest Builders! The world has been destroyed and you are the only one who can rebuild it block by block. Read all about it in this Dragon Quest Builders Switch Review! Since the release of the Nintendo Switch, a multitude of titles from the other consoles has already been transferred to Nintendo's hybrid.

On the way to work!

The Switch brings a unique feature to all these games, namely the fact that you can enjoy all those titles along the way. And with Dragon Quest Builders you get this option for free and for nothing. The biggest advantage that Dragon Quest Builders has of course compared to the previously launched PlayStation 4 version is the option to play 24/7! In the train, on the plane, at home or at work.

Thanks to Nintendo's hybrid console you can take this good RPG with you wherever you go and that's great. It must be said that the game looks great on a small screen! We have already seen what it was like to experience Skyrim on the Switch and with the arrival of Dragon Quest Builders it is again emphasized that RPGs are possible on Nintendo's device. In terms of control, the game is good to do.

At the bottom of the screen on the GamePad you have all what you have collected so far, to think of blocks, feathers, food and so on. And with all those items you can scroll with ease. Furthermore you open the menu with the B-button which is sacred for you during all your missions. Because in this main menu you will find items, equipment, status, recipes, buildings and misc (such as your settings and how you can play).

Feels very different

Incidentally, it is a little peculiar that you do not scroll through the main menu with the left thumb stick, but only with the four-point keys. No problem if you know that once, but the first few times this option feels a bit strange.

This is the same with the PlayStation4 version, but it feels different on Nintendo's console. And that is not the only thing that feels different with this version. The game looks and plays the same on the Switch, but has a number of exclusive objects and possibilities.

This allows you to navigate the worlds much faster on a Great Scaregrub. You can also defeat enemies to get to Pixel Blocks . You can use it again to make a Dragon Quest Game Pak so that you can get more items to build again!

All these things make Dragon Quest Builders a lot more inviting to pick up in between, for example during a trip, but at the bottom of the line it remains an RPG from the stall of Square Enix. And that means a nice long story, to be exactly one of about 50 hours. One where the pace is pretty low.

Nice and long adventure

Dragon Quest Builders has divided this story into four chapters, in which you always visit a new world. In every world you then have to build a city and satisfy the people who come to it. And you do that again by talking to them and completing countless missions.

These missions diverge from collecting ingredients for a cook, to taking care of a complete infirmary. And building, which after all is a bit of the red thread in the game, can of course not be missed. Regularly a resident asks you to build a new space with a specific purpose.

For all these missions you have to go out to collect materials or follow your compass until you get to a certain location where another part of your mission is located. This is not always clear and often takes quite some time. Along the way you get hungry, so you have to eat, and you get to stick with iconic Dragon Quest enemies like the cute Slimeys.

So there is plenty to do. And then we are not even talking about the many side missions you encounter in the worlds, although they are often a bit flat. Find ten ingredients for me, defeat a few enemies and you get more of that kind of stuff in these missions. Just like on the PS4, the game is again fun to play through all these kinds of missions!

Conclusion

On the Switch Dragon Quest Builders is at least as strong as the version for the PlayStation 4. But the Switch version feels different from the one on the PS4. And that's because of the advantages that Nintendo's device offers.

You can of course play Dragon Quest Builders on the go, but you also get exclusive items that make the game more accessible to play briefly. And although the game is not distinctive enough for a second purchase if you already have the PS4 version, this is the version to buy if you still have doubts about a purchase.

Pros

➕ On the way to work with your village!
➕ Nice long RPG
➕ Exclusive items
➕ Faster through the world with a Great Scaregrub
➕ Inviting to pick up in between

Cons

➖ Tempo is low
➖ Zij missions add little to the story
➖ Sometimes it is unclear what you should do
