Why "Platform Exclusive" games need to stop being a thing

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

Platform Exclusive are a rather new (in the history of gaming) phenomenon, which started with the two major console platforms (Xbox and Playstation) or Microsoft vs Sony competing for respective player bases for their consoles.

These companies pay hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars to secure a title exclusively for their console, sometimes for weeks (Call of Duty) but sometimes for years (Grand Theft Auto V) and indefinitely (Uncharted) which is absolutely ridiculous and insane, not just for the giants paying this sum of money, but for the game developers themselves.

Is there no sense of dignity anymore? Is it all about the dollar dollar bills? Big software and game developers used to develop for any platform they could (with the capital they had) to get their product out there, to show it off and to allow the gamers that were like them to play a game that they thought were masterpieces and loved to play themselves. This entire market has now changed and for the worse. Developers now only care about how much money they can squeeze out of us with their DLCs and micro-transactions, the market has flipped from a consumer market to a developer market and, we as gamers should not let this continue!

Some of you may be saying: "Yeah dude I get you its all crap now-a-days, bring back the golden days of vidya with Half-Life and Hitman: Blood Money, but seriously how are We going to change the market?"
Well it's not too much of a case of making a "grass roots movement" as it is about being Informed... We all need to stop buying pre-orders, as often at release we are left with crap we didn't pay for and a game riddled with bugs and micro-transactions by a lazy, money hungry developer. We need to rely on the reviews people make of a game and not make purchases too quickly, see to get back to the golden age of games, we need to think like we're in the golden age of games. We used to have to go to a boutique (store) to purchase physical copies of video games, chuck em in our DVD drive and install for a few hours, so before we bought we analysed that case up and down 50 times to make sure it was what we wanted, and so we GOT what we wanted. Slowing down and taking your time to purchase a video game is much more rewarding and ensures you get the game you want with no BS, so next time you want to click that buy button on steam, the app store or otherwise, take a few hours to think it over, watch your favorite youtuber play it and see if it is the game for you before spending your hard earned dollars.

Wtf is?, Is a great series with in-depth reviews for upcoming titles

As for platform exclusivity, its all the same thing, if we take our time and stop purchasing consoles for the sake of a few games, developers will be forced to produce their games for a variety of platforms again. Its all supply, demand and consumerism, if we take away our consumerism, and we demand for platform nullity (no platform favoring) then developers will either conform or risk going out of business.

Anyway that's my few dollars worth, I hope you guys enjoyed reading this rather long article about Platform exclusivity and game developer BS, if so and you want to see more like it make sure to give that follow button a bit of a tickle, cheers guys.

Ive spent money on systems before just to get a game I really wanted. From a marketing standpoint and most likely a overall company profits standpoint it makes 100% sense.

However I am VERYYY glad to see Destiny 2 will be released on PC in September I look forward to that greatly as I rather play shooters and most games on my PC.

I am in the same boat, bought the Xbox 360 for the Halo games and ended up selling it again for a $50 profit a couple of years later, Shooters on PC are much easier and precise rather than 'General Aim-assist' areas, Although there are definitely games that play better with controller (like Rocket League) so I always keep a controller nearby. That's awesome to hear Destiny 2 will be released on PC, I've wanted to play Destiny since the first game, however never actually got around to it since it was console exclusive so I'll be looking forward to playing that come September!

It's all about the money, money, money ... thing is you buy the console cheap, as the true price of the hardware is twice as you pay for it, then you buy games and the original investment - the console - , on your 3rd or 4th AAA game purchase - everyone in the industry it's making money, consoles industry, games developers, distributors, so on ...

As per Exclusive content, there it's not so much of a difference, AAA games will be available on both, sure there will be Uncharted \ Forza \ God of War \ Halo games - but without the competition, prices will go up, quality down and nobody will get what they want.

That's exactly it! It's pretty ridiculous that, for some triple-A titles, a new one I can immediately think of would be Days Gone, is developed with an engine like UE4, which means its very easy to port across all platforms, is stuck on a single platform for no reason other than money... Its a very sad and frustrating time for gamers.

I've always been a PC gamer, and this exclusivity thing never made sense to me. PC is IMO, the best platform for gaming with unlimited options, and Devs often ignore it which really pisses me off. PC gaming industry is booming, and it makes no sense to ignore it.

Yeah I'm a PC gamer through and through, it's not just the best platform but it's the easiest platform so it's just stupid that it gets ignored because the devs want more money and can get it through exclusivity deals.
