Oxygen Not Included. A great game to play, even in its Alpha

Oxygen Not included

is in Pre-Alpha which is purely amazing for the amount of present features and mechanics. So far I have sunken just over 110 hours into the game and I’m in love. I purchased it a while ago and I let it sit there until I noticed the previous update “Outbreak” which dragged me into love with the game. They listened to the community and really showed off their skill with the newest update Oil upgrade. Sure there are a lot more improvements to come but oh man does this make me excited.

They have expanded on what their game has to offer and im excited to be going through this indepth serise with you all. I hope to also get @juicy-shark to do some cross over reviews with me, especially when I dive into the nitty gritty mechanics :D

Biomes:

There are 6 different biomes with different resources, creatures and plants. They are mostly separated by veins of Abyssalite. The unique contents of the biomes are what separate them. Remove all the blocks and you have any space like no other.(In other words the Frozen biome will not stay cold although it will keep its back-ground color. The cold area effect dissipates with the blocks inside.)

This game has 6 biomes which have unique gases, blocks, liquids and mobs. Two are layers of biomes and the rest are scattered with your starting biome staying the same between playthroughs.

Starting Biome - Temperate Biome

This is the biome you and your duplicants start in. You will find at least 1 pool of water to start you off. It will also contain, Dirt, Sandstone, Sand, Coal, Algae and copper. The native plants in this biome are Muckroot, Mealwood and Bristle blossom. Luckily the game makes sure you start off with at least 5 accessible tiles of Oxylite, which will produce Oxygen for your duplicants to consume while you set up shop. This is also the only biome you will find Shine bugs or Hatches.

Swamp Biome - Hazardous early game

Swamps have a higher temperature than the starting biome. It is home to large pockets of Polluted Oxygen, sometimes under high pressure which means opening one into your base would be a baaaad idea. You will find Sedimentary Rock, Gold Amalgam, Raw Metal as well as more Algae. You will find the plants Dusk Cap and Thimble reed. You will need thimble reed for Atmo Suits and Clothes.
The swamp Biome is also home to the infamous SLIME LUNG . Untreated this can wipe our a whole colony.

Caustic Biome

This biome is even warmer than the Swamp. You will find Chlorine Gas in abundance here aswell as Hydrogen Gas. Here you will find Bleach stone, phosphorite, coal, igneous rock, algae and iron ore. The plants in this section are Pincha Pepper plants and Balm Lillies. The animal you will find here is called a Morb. A morb will discreet polluted oxygen every now and again. They can also come up clogged outhouses. They multiply with time.

Frozen Biome

This biome is, you guessed it; bone chilling. Duplicants unprotected will get hypothermia if not wearing a warm sweater or a atmo suit. Its normal -20 to -40 degrees Celsius. I has large ammounts of Ice that will melt. As well as polluted Ice, snow, granite and wolframite. Which have their own benefits when transferring heat and whatnot. The native plants here are Sleet wheat and Wheezewort.

Oil Biome

Added in the Oil update, we have an oil biome, filled with pockets of sometimes highly pressured oil. Don't forget the temperature is 80 degrees C (on the top of the level) and up to 380 degrees C . I also has Oil Reservoirs, diamond, granite and iron ore. Look out of the pockets of natural gas and carbon dioxide. You will find a new beast called the Slicksters. They consume carbon dioxide and produce oil.

Volcanic Biome

Volcanic biomes are at the bottom of the map, It has pools of magma at 1600 degrees Celsius in pockets outlines with Neutronium which cant be mined.

Duplicants

Duplicants are your main tools to access this meteorite. They need food, bathrooms, sleeping quarters and a place to get rid of germs! They each have individual traits (similar to Rimworld by Tynan Sylvester) and Stress Responses (mainly, Ugly Crier, Stress Vomiting and Destructive. Not in any specific order) In this screen you can name your Duplicants (which you can change in game) also shuffle through them or change the name of your colony.

In the Jobs tab there are 18 Job titles. Left to right in the photos below as followed:

  • Combat

Combat isn't as fleshed out as I would like to see this game strive for. There is strength attributes but they have little function in the game at the TOW (Time of Writing)

  • Aid

Making sure your colony has someone ready to fiddle with a thermometer while your sick duplicant lies in the med bed gaining strength

  • Massage

Every Duplicant deserves a back rub right? RIGHT?!?!!? When their stress leverls get too high you can have your duplicants find a Massage table (which requires electricity) and calm their nerves. In saying that you can also deny them that pleasure..

  • Cook

Gotta eat! If you don't eat, you don't poop, You don't poop. Simple
YOU DIE! Even if it is watered down dirt...

  • Art

Decor has its own overlay we will look at in a another review! But Artwork is for your talented duplicants that can draw or sculpt well!

  • Compost

Someone litterally has to flip the shit. It a place to put polluted dirt and gets us fertalizer!

  • Research

The research tree keeps getting expanded and will no doubt get more complex as the game marches on.

  • Hydrofan

The Hydrofan is a building that takes water and requires a duplicant for it to run. It slowly cools the gas in the immideate area. As long as the duplicant is operating the hydrofan.

  • Power

Its workout season! Get you Duplicants on the treadmill! Get them making power for you to grow and increase your base capability

  • Disenfect

Germs, Germs, Germs GERMS HELP!
Someone has to disenfect everything!!!

  • Repair

Sometimes your Duplicants lashout their stress levels in signs of destruction. Someone needs to repair your buildings as they wear and tear or get bullied.

  • Maintenance

Tend to buildings like the oil well

  • Mop

Clean up on Isle 4!!!

  • Harvest

Someone has to harvest your Mealwood before it rots!

  • Sweep

I don't see why duplicants cant pick up after themselves. But sure, i guess we can have a whole load of duplicants to clean up after my miners.

  • Build

These Duplicants will build if all the materials have been delivered.

  • Deliver

This duplicant will deliver anything around your base. Algae to your Deoxidizer.

  • Dig

These duplicants will dig away at whatever may be before them, unless its a liquid... or Neutronium.

You can change which duplicants can do certain jobs. Hopefully they add a numerical toggle version in the jobs panel (similar to Rimworld) . Although this game does have an individual 1-9 priority overlay which works for anything except flipping power switches (the power switch entity) and changing Valves (gas and liquid). This function could be improved upon but may break the game in its current state. I hope to hear more from the developers and see where the game goes with the current priority system.

We are going to have a look at some game basics. Oxygen! Suprisingly its included in the first few cycles of the game. As mentioned earlier, Oxylite gives off oxygen , this is in trade for some mass. It bascailly evaporates into gas. It stops at a certain pressure.

Algae is used to produce oxygen in the beginning stages of the game either inside a Algae Deoxidizer (Which requires electricity)

Or a Algae Terrarium, which sucks in carbon dioxide, water and produces oxygen.

Quick Note, If you havn't seen this game before and your a numbers and sciency kinda guy, Check out @Brothgar on youtube (i dont think he has steemit but ill tag anyway.

If you havent checked out my other Oxygen not Included Post Check it out Here

Mod Support

I think think that games like this really flourish if the deveoplers have strong support for the modding community. Like with (once again refferencing Rimworld) . Rimworld has some really good mods that have helped shape the game and can offer quite a different experience. I hope to see this game follow the same star.
