Road to being a gamergirl // 10 GAMES OF MY CHILDHOOD

in #gaming7 years ago

I got my first computer in 1997. Sadly I don't remember the specifications of it or what processor did it have, but it was an epic new toy in the household. You could do stuff in MS Paint, play Solitaire, Mahjong and even buy game CD-s from the stores.

There were quite a lot of games that I managed to play in my early days and of course not all of them are not mentioned in this post. I decided to mention those which have been THE MOST memorable to me.

1. HERCULES (1997)

This was, as I remember, on of the first games that my dad bought for me and so the first "advanced" game that I played on the computer. It was easy enough for a little kid like me, but some levels were also pretty hard where I had to defeat montsers.

2. TOMB RAIDER 1 (1996)

I don't actually remember much about playing this game, only that I had it and played it. But ever since I have kept my eye on Tomb Raider series and I think all of the games are amazing.

3. AGE OF EMPIRES I (1997)

My dad's friend worked at a computer store in the 90s and there were many computers for visitors to use. I remember that one evening my dad had an AoE lan party with his friends and he took me with him. There was one computer free for me to use and so the big guys let me sit behind the computer and try to play the game with them. Of course I was the first one to lose, but we had many lan parties after that night. I also played this game a lot at home. Cheats like "pepperoni pizza", "home run" and "bigdaddy" are unforgettable.

4. DELTA FORCE 2 (1999)

My dad was trying out this shooter game and also let me try it. I did play a few missions that night and I remember that after I went to sleep, I saw the game in my dreams as well. I was so hooked. This was the first FPS game that I tried and this genre was a good fit for me right away.

5. NO ONE LIVES FOREVER (2000)

This is the game that I truly NEVER forget. This was the first game that I really LOVED and played through multiple times. There is also N.O.L.F. 2 which I loved as much as the first one. I have always been a bit sad that this game reached its end and was not continued. I wish there were 3rd, 4th, 5th parts too! So if there are any game developers reading this, take this into considering and re-make this game! :D

6. COSSACKS (2001)

Another strategy game I tried and played a lot beside AoE series. Although I must admit I really sucked at this game. I tried it day after day, but I never won. I don't remember even one win. The game was hard and all the time the enemy (computer) came too early and destroyed me. :D

7. TRANSPORT TYCOON (1994)

All sorts of simulation games were amazing and still are. One of my favourites from all of the tycoons was Transport Tycoon.

8. THE SIMS (2000)

This is something everyone should know. The revolutionary The Sims. A game that had the most hype if I could say so, because if the other games weren't really interesting to my girl-friends, the Sims was absolutely their favourite. I remember my classmates coming to my place and I let them play Sims on my computer. This was a whole now level to play "home," which we used to play without computer, in real life, a lot.

9. SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE 2 (2002)

This was the game that lead me into online FPS games. It had many multiplayer gamemodes like Deathmatch, Team deathmatch, Capture the flag and Elimination. In the last two you had to work as a team with other online players and complete the objective.
This game made the switch into the next game a lot easier:

10. COUNTER-STRIKE 1.6 (2000)

I believe SoF II wasn't that popular in Estonia, because I don't still know many people who know about this game. But CS 1.6 is definitely a game that was and still is popular amongst everyone. At least everyone know this game, right?

Have you played any game mentioned in this post?
What were the first games that you played?

I remember like 7years ago i played Age Of Empires 2 and like 2013 i started to play cs 1.6 and im still playing it and im pretty good wanna 1v1 :D?

Since I haven't played CS for over a year, soon to be 2 years, then I think the 1v1 match wont be fair. :D

I got my first PC in early 2000 and I have to say, it was the most amazing thing to me too. And all these games you listed bring me back, what a shame that I barely remember anything from playing them besides the childish happiness I felt.

Sometimes I even think that I felt more happy to play these games than those I play today. I mean high graphics and much better gameplays are great, but since everything is so easily accessible the emotion of buying or getting a new game isn't the same as it was back then. :D

I also happen to think that as you get to experience games more and more, you eventually need something totally amazing to blow you away like the first games you got to play did. Coca Cola will always taste good but the 1000th tasting won't beat the first.

I'm at a point where I've seen every possible genre of videogames and I'm just waiting for Virtual Reality to draw me back to gaming.

I hope you consider introducing Nintendo to your children. As an adult I think they do the best games for children. Just look at the newest mario's or the new Zelda! Top notch products. I'm sad that I didn't get to play Nintendo games like Mario or Zelda at my childhood.

I am a true Nintendo fan! I had NES before I even had a computer and I'm not lying if I say that I would still like to play old Super Mario sometimes. These things really don't age. Pixelated things are still awesome and platform games as well.

I did have Nintendo DS too for a while and I really enjoyed it. I have been longing to get it again just for me to play, but it would also be a great tool for the kid I believe. I am not that much into smartphones, don't ask me why.

And I have also dreamed for a long time to get a Nintendo Console. I wanted Wii for a long time, but I don't know for sure if it's still a thing. I really liked Mario Kart and bowling/tennis etc. The new Switch console doesn't seem as good to me as Wii was, but we'll see in the future when I have enought extra money to buy all the stuff. :D

With Switch you get DS and a console I believe. Also they just announced some very cool tech utilizing cardboards. Really perfect for children, trust me! The newest Zelda and Mario are both 5/5 games I've heard. To me Switch looks like a better option for those with kids.

The old NES games are HARD!

I'll add this to the list to buy with Steem money when I get rich. :'D

Man, I want this so bad now. :D

Good luck!

So let me count the Nintendo fans I know on Steemit: it's you, @triverse, @igster, me - feel free to add more to the list.

Guys, are you in for a Steemit NES gaming contest? We should be allowed using emulators as well.

Games worth taking part into the contest:

  • Battle City
  • Tetris
  • Lunar ball
  • ... (add more)

I can even suggest a host with more followers who could agree hosting the challenge, so there's no need for us to take the additional responsibilities of organizing a competition (I'm a contest organizer and I know what I'm talking about - it's a tough thing).

I don't have any device left on which I could play these games. I don't even understand how such a contest could happen via online. :D

Well, me neither, but who said we should use real devices. Is it a bad practice if we just stick to the NES emulators and play on our PCs and Macs?

As for hosting such a contest, we can just follow what @necromortis already invented with his recent Hill Climb Challenge.

I mean, for me the lack of device is not a real issue and the 'hot water' was already discovered by @necromortis :))

Yeah that kind of thing could work. I'd definitely keep my eye on it, but idk if I'd participate. Havent played those games in like... too many years. :D

This is the first time I have seen someone mentioning me/my work on Steemit! Thanks mate :)

More contests to come if you want to stick around.

Yeah, I feel the same way sometimes, but then I try replaying these old games and I get tired pretty quickly after the first shot of serotonin. I guess that's the power of childhood - when you know less you appreciate more :)

Well, it was a new world to explore. It was interesting. It gave us so much amazing experiences that we didn't know to even dream about. But yeah.. going back to play these games isn't the same as well mostly. But I do say that AoE is still amazing (as I wrote in my previous post).

AoE is one of The Big Boys and Girls of games, I don't it will ever get old ;P

Hey, i started with cs 1.5 but i played delta force and hercules a lot, from the list above. I also played a lot Death Rally and Heretik and Duke Nukem and Mortal Kombat and many others. Great Post!

I didn't like Duke Nukem at all. I did play this, but it definitely didn't make the list this time. :'D

Thanks!

Well it was a cool game at the time. The games in this list were very good though. Especially cs and delta force. :)

I forgot one game though that also had a major impact of my gaming life: Heroes of the Might and Magic!

Oh yeah, that's an important one. I even play heroes these days with @ladyrednails for the sake of good old times. Also mario party or super smash bros but those are not for pc so I don't know if it counts

Still counts. :D

AoE was awesome. I also have fond memories of the Caesar series and the original Warcraft - before the Blizzard MMORPG. I don't think I even played Cossacks, but I love strategy games, so I'll have to see if I can find a copy of it.

There was Cossacks 3 that came out in 2016 and can be found on Steam for €20. It looks quite the same, but I don't know. I think it is still similar to the first one. It has a bit of different style than AoE and seems more difficult.

Can you suggest any good strategy games in last few years?

I keep going back to Civilization V. Banished was fun for awhile, but that's more a city builder, kinda. I've also recently started playing DOTA 2 as it combines strategy and my latest gaming obsession - tower defense. By far the best in that genre is the Kingdom Rush series, but I've also enjoyed Tower Madness 2.

@geekorner recently suggested I try Nuclear Throne, which has great reviews on Steam. Haven't tried it yet, but it looks compelling.

I like Dota, but it's not RTS. It is a MOBA. :D

I havent tried Civilization like never. I don't know why. It has been popular pretty much since the start, but I never got my hands on it. Banished seemed interesting, but not enough to spend money on it. :D

Nuclear isn't strategy as well imho. :D You're falling out of the genre here. :D

Yeah it's true, I'm all over the place. Mostly I've been doing tower defense games lately...they kinda let me turn my brain off partially and destroy stuff, which is fun after taking care of a 28-month old all day :p

Civilization is a grind once you understand the mechanics, but can still be fun if you play in different ways, try to win with different conditions.

I also have fond memories of Stronghold: Crusader. There, that's back in the genre.

If I had a few hundred extra dollars, and much energy at the end of a day, there's loads of interesting looking games on Steam. So many games, so little time.

Yup. I'd pretty much loved it if I could just be a stay-at-home-gal and play games all day, just like in childhood. Being a grown-up sucks sometimes. :'D

Sometimes. It does have its benefits too :D

I don't actually see none, since I don't care about drinking or casinos anyway. :D

We got our first PC around 2000, when I was like 3 years old. I started out playing those "color the picture" games but not long after my older brother started loaning game CDs from his classmates so we were playing different games from GTA Vice City to The Godfather and Postal 2. Also Counter Strike 1.6 and Source. I have a bad memory with one of the two CS's, involving me fainting, so I'm not a big fan of the CS franchise since.

Nice. I definitely have to do a sequel for this post, because there are more games that are worth mentioning. The first GTA's were amazing, I haven't really liked them after the Vice City.
CS isn't a healthy game anyway. :'D

@kassixo My first game was Tetris on my sister’s Computer, in 1989, I think? Then Oregon Trail in school, and finally, all kinds of games on my friend’s Nintendo :) Super Mario was the best.

Great post! :)

It made me think about my childhood, what nice they were to play..I remember me playing Tomb raider on my Playstation 1. That was sick!!,but my favourite was GTA Vice City for sure, that game made me feel like a gangster :)

Speed:Haste
NFS
Rayman
Diablo
Starcraft
Doom
Quake
CS1.6
HL
Rollcage
Jedi Outcast
Freelancer
...ja liiga palju veel :P

Diablo is/was amazing, but somehow I managed to play it late in the 2000s. :D

Wow! A lot of memories there, takes me back :). No One Lives Forever had slipped my mind, thanks for reminding me.

I just played/streamed it today. I was amazed. I was prepared to disappoint a little, because 18 years is a long time in game graphics etc. I was afraid it won't look as good as it did or looks really bad on my pc today. But nope. Seriously. For a game that is 18 years old it still looks really good and not bad at all!
You should try it!

I will! It is always fun when old games still hold up! Especially 3D games, since I feel that they usually tend to age worse than 2D games. Also graphics are of course not everything :D.
