Let's Review: PUBG

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.

PlayerUnknown's hit game is part of the ever growing "Battle Royale" genre games. This one, however, was insanely popular upon release and still is right now.

It took me quite some time to really decide to give the game a try due to it's, in my opinion, to high price tag. The game costs £25, or $30. In my opinion, that's a little too expensive, and I think the game is probably worth £15-20 instead with what little content you really find inside. HOWEVER, if you're a big Battle Royale game-mode fan, then 1. You probably already have this game, or 2. Will like this game.

I will admit, I'm not very good at this game. I'm good at avoiding people and getting into the top 20, but usually die when I get into combat. However, that's a thing I do like. There are many ways you can play this game. Go around hunting down players and killing everything you find, or stock up on guns and hide out in the circle until you HAVE to fight. It's your choice.

Play alone, or with two to four other players in squads. There's also a zombie mode that I've yet to try, not because I don't want to, but because nobody really plays it. Seems interesting though.

But no, the meat of the game is the main Normal mode. In this mode, you drop from a plane with 100 other players and must fight and survive to be the last survivor. It's an intense game at times, with some admittedly slow parts of just running through fields.

The map itself is huge. You could easily go a whole game with out seeing anyone until you die, as 90% of my games go, honestly. But, the map grows increasingly smaller as time goes on, drawing everyone closer together, compacting more and more people into smaller and smaller spaces to increase the speed of battle.

Now, the game just came out of Early Access, however, I would not call this a finished game. It's still buggy, it still has some lag and rubber banding issues with some questionable server reliability, but it's nothing game-breaking.

Honestly, I found myself enjoying this game far more than I expected. It can be slow at times, but when you're in the final twenty, all compressed in a small circle trying to come out on top, it can be very intense, giving you this feeling of Paranoia as you look over your shoulder constantly, unsure if someone in a nearby house, or behind a tree, can see you and is ready to snipe you when you look away.

There's a sense of luck to the game too, or knowledge of the maps. Loot randomly spawns, and you collect healing items, grenades, rifles, shotguns, pistols or sniper rifles to protect yourself. There's also various clothing, three levels of backpacks all offering more space to carry more things, three levels of helmets or body armour to offer various levels of protection. However, don't think that it's a "Person with the best gear wins" scenario, because trust me, it requires skill. I've died carrying the best armour and weapons, because I'm just bad at the game.

It's definitely an "Easy to learn, hard to master" sort of game, and I've found myself wanting to master it. I have this constant voice nagging at me to "Play one more round." or to "Beat being 13th place." and to try and get better than I did last time.

There's also loot boxes with different cosmetics for anyone interested in that shit. I've only opened one box and got a pair of boots so I'm not too crazy about them, but it's whatever. It's something we've all really come to expect at this point.

PUBG is all in all, a fun Battle Royale game that managed to capture my interest better than any of the other games out there in it's genre. It offers a high replay value if you find yourself enjoying it and seems to be getting constant updates.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds gets an 8/10 from me.

I recommend it to any fans of the genre who haven't tried it yet, or just to any PvP fans. Maybe pick it up if it goes on sale, or just try and refund it if it's not your thing like I planned to do. However, seems I'm gonna be keeping this one in my Steam Library.

Thanks for the write-up! I've been considering getting this game but I don't think my laptop will be able to run it, so that's mainly what's been putting me off. Especially with you mentioning that it doesn't feel like a complete game, and finding the price to be a bit high, would it be something to buy (on sale)? Or not at all?

In my opinion, your safest bet would be getting Fortnite: Battle Royale! It’s practically the same game, it’s free, easier on the computer (meaning your laptop should run it with ease) and has far less bugs. F:BR is another game that blew up in the genre and many consider it to be better than PUBG.

If you do end up falling in love with F:BR, I’d say it’s worth grabbing PUBG when it’s on sale and giving it a shot. You can always refund it if your laptop doesn’t run it well, just make sure it’s with in 14 days and you’ve played the game for less than 2 hours and Steam will accept the refund! Hope this helped!

Thanks for the reply! Some of my friends have been getting into Fortnite so I’ll probably play some games with them to check it out!

Awesome! Hope you enjoy it!
