Dead Cells (game) : 3 weeks in

in #gaming6 years ago

I don't play every day or anything. I tend to do stuff like exercise and drink beer and video games are kind of a last resort type thing. So I have been casually playing this game for 3 weeks and I gotta say - this is a very difficult game.

For those that don't know, Dead Cells is a 2-d side-scrolling platformer that is filled with gore and functions a bit like a metroidvania experience with hints of random-drop Diablo-ness. That make any sense?

What makes the game so difficult is that unless i am missing some sort of extremely well hidden secret, there is no way to memorize the levels because they are compiled in a random fashion every single time. What enemies you encounter and where are also completely random although there are restrictions on what level of baddie you meet depending on which level you are in.

You also perma-die in this game, all your forward progress is lost, and you don't keep any of the items that you had gathered during that run. That's right... you have to go all the way through the game from start to finish without dying in order to beat the game.

So far i have made it past the second boss and then went a bit further and that was it. I encountered this new enemy that starts some sort of fire maelstrom that sucks you in and it is unblockable. I can see that I am not going to like those guys very much.

There are some upgrades but for the most part you start each run out with almost nothing and it can be a little frustrating because if they don't drop the weapon you like, you could get stuck arming yourself with something you would rather not. Of course you can always restart the game, which is what most seasoned vets will do but if that is what happens why not just let us choose which one we want rather than forcing a restart waiting for RNG to drop what we want? Seems a bit dumb to me. Anyway, i like this game but to be honest I don't really think I stand much chance of ever finishing it. I am just not dedicated enough. In the meantime i still enjoy playing it!

Yes, deadcells is a roguelike game. This means that the game doesn't have specifically built levels but more so is made up of rules for randomly generating levels. Everything from enemies, to items and obstacles is randomized but usually balanced around your current level or progress in the game. This originated from a game called rogue that was a 1980s PC game that used graphics made of letters and keyboard symbols to depict randomly generated dungeons to explore. Most console games had limited data so this type of gameplay wasn't popularized in games until PS1 and Nintendo DS games (Though games like Toejam & Earl for Genesis did use roguelike mechanics, it just wasn't a popular trend). Nowadays it is quite popular. The original rogue game was repetitive and tedious, but games such as Dark Cloud made the roguelike formula more fun by mixing in new genres of play. Dark cloud had random dungeons to explore, rebuilding and designing towns, using gems to upgrade and customize weapons that could break if improperly maintained, fishing, and more. Modern roguelikes often mix different genres and gameplay mechanics together for super fun experiences. Today there are many traditional roguelikes like Sproggiwood and Pokémon mystery dungeons. But the action RPG roguelike genre is also very popular with games like dead cells, rogue legacy, binding of Isaac, etc. <3
