The Blackout Club - Upcoming Horror Game From BioShock and Dishonored Veterans

in #gaming6 years ago (edited)

Since Irrational Games disbanded 4 years ago, we rarely heard of big news from the former devs again. But that doesn't mean there is no news of them. Some are working on a new Alien game, some have made a high rated FPS rogue-lite game called City of Brass. There's also one of the devs that went to 2K after he was done with Arkane's Prey. And 12 of the devs including former Creative Director and founder of Irrational Games, Ken Levine, formed a smaller self-publishing studio called Ghost Story that is still being quiet about their narrative-heavy project.

And this post is about an upcoming game from two former BioShock devs that have formed a new studio called Question, a game developer team that makes you can't help but question the company name.

So, former Dishonored programmers, and former BioShock veterans walk into a bar and this is what happen; The Blackout Club, an upcoming first person co-op horror game that looks like it'd be right up your street if you like Stranger Things.

"You are a teenager from a small, modern town. Each morning, you awaken covered in mud or scratches, with no memory of the night before."

What come up to your mind when you read the synopsys above? It sounds like someone was having a wild party the night before. But no one having a party each night in a week, yes? Because waking up covered in mud and scratches is not something that only happen one time for the player character here. You team up with other teenagers that have similar blackout experience as you, hence the name.

Your best friend has gone missing, a mysterious group of adults tries to eliminate you, there's an uncanny music come from a hidden underground tunnels, and you will uncover what secret lies beneath your neighbourhood.

Using tools such as drones, grapling hooks, and noisemakers you will work together to outwit that group of evil adults and gather evidence of their doing to prove that there really is a conspiracy going on. So when we can't fight the horror back in most horror games, The Blackout Club give us the ability to do that.

Although not actually hit them in the head, maybe, or splatter their brains with a shotgun. Well we are playing as a teenager after all. The gameplay is to "outwit and outmaneuver" the enemies and I'm in for that. Strategically planning everything right before executing it rather than 'run and gun' the enemies sounds pretty cool to me.

The game uses procedural generation elements that will change the enemies, loot, and more to make "no two nights will be the same". So it seems the map will stay the same, but what we'll face and find will be different. You can play solo if you want to play lonewolf, and the procedural generation will adjust to that.

Among the other mysterious projects that are still have a long way before their initial release dates that former BioShock devs are working on, this is the only one that has been revealed and it is interesting. Not that I expecting the game to be as amazing as BioShock or Dishonored, but knowing that the guys working on this was the ones behind those amazing titles, I hope and I think this game will be awesome.

Powered by Unreal Engine 4 the graphics looks good with rooms for improvements. I hope the gameplay will be as good when it's out in 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Looks really interesting, man. My wife told me about this game the other day and showed me the trailer. It does have that Stranger Things look, feel, and vibe to it. And that's not a bad thing :)
Looking forward to more updates of the game. Sounds like it might be somewhat like L4D in sense where the map is the same but the gameplay is always unique due to randomized monster spawn points.

It is, and in this early stage it already shows how atmospheric the game would be. I hope they won't add supernatural power of any sort for the player character, or more advanced 'tools' than drones and the crossbow on the screenshot. Because I want to see how this "outwitting" gameplay as an ordinary kid play out.
