PUBG Dev's Next Game Will Take the Battle Up to the A:IR

"So... Not giant balloons?"

-Booker DeWitt (BioShock: Infinite)

This new upcoming MMORPG looks like something to be anticipated. From Bluehole Studio, the developer that brought you PlayerUnknown's Battleground and Tera, this game caught my attention with its steampunk theme and its title that perfectly goes together with the game's theme like peanut butter and jelly.

Here's the reveal trailer of the game, A:IR.

Err.. okay those frame rates in some places doesn't taste like peanut butter and jelly. But I think I won't judge it. For now. Well it better be fixed when it's launched, otherwise the only thing that will increase is the number of people mocking the game on YouTube.

Ascent: Infinite Realm, shortened to A:IR. A magical-steampunk themed game with lots of aerial gameplay but still don't lose the ground gameplay features. So there will be steampunk mechs and technologies such as the airships (duh) but also fantasy creatures like dragon and magical abilities. And looks like it's not only airships, you can see jetpack and pretty cool wingsuit too.

From the reveal trailer other features than the aerial and ground combat we could expect are crafting, fishing, farming, some kind of sport that will have you fly through circle checkpoints using the wingsuit, and also.. barrel race (2:07)? Well I like 'serious' game with goofy part in it. Because sometimes you just need it when you are a bit tired of the fighting.

"..Should you be unfortunate enough to find the wrong side of their blades, prepare your last words." -A:IR
My last words would probably be "Lag."

There are five classes for the players to choose from; Sorceress the most squishy class that specialize in offensive magical abilities, Mystic which is similar with Sorceress but seems to be more of a support with allies-healing ability.

Warlord, the frontliner tanky class, while the marksman class Gunslinger attacking from the distance, and Assassin, as you can imagine is low on defensive but high on lethality.

Assassin, my favourite class and I'd love to play other steampunk assassin like Corvo and Daud.

We've seen magics and machines in the same universe in some games, but I think we need more if it's steampunk. The biggest example I could think of is Dishonored, but that's a very different game from A:IR. Plus it's open world, which add up the potential to be a unique game here.

The vehicles and mounts in A:IR will not only serve as transportation, but will also provide 'ultimate' battle experience, A:IR Realms vs Realms PvP. I'm imagining how strategically challenging it could be when you can do the battle both in the air and on the ground.

Although it does need fixes and improvements on some parts, it's a nice idea with the flying gameplay feature. It'd be bad if the potentially chaotic-fun massive battle ruined with frame rates issues. But hey, the trailer was made in a very early stage so it's hopefully will be better at launch.

When is the launch date, exactly? There's no exact release date for now, but the closed beta test is expected in mid 2018 and Kakao Games will be the publisher for the western release. So we will probably get some fresh AIR  in late 2018.

So what do you think? I mean the game, not the pun.

Woah. Hadn't heard of this until I read your post--frames might be a little eh but wow that game looks beautiful! I'll definitely be trying it out once it releases :)

It's always good to know that my post could give useful info. And yeah hopefully there's no more frame rates issue at launch, it seem like the biggest problem we could see there, they still have time to improve it. The game looks beautiful indeed, especially if you like steampunk.
