Brilliant Small Details in Video Games

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

"His hands do violence. But there is a different dream in his heart."

-The Heart (Dishonored)

Sometimes they are noticeable and sometimes they don't, but they are still there adding to the immersion of the game to some degree and make the game more alive. Now that I think about it, these so called "small" detail are actually a big part of the game.

Check out the following in game small details I've written and imagine if the game didn't have them. Well probably not all of them are so 'impactful' and the game would still be fine without them, but still I'd love to see this stuff in games.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Waving Hands in Your Face

In Dragon Dogma: Dark Arisen, you, as the Arisen is the only being that could have followers that according to the game look exactly like human yet are neither human nor monster called Pawn. You could have up to four Pawns with one of your own creation.

They can carry your stuff, they are customizable, they could give you more knowledge on the quests you are doing, they have comments and dialogues on pretty much everything you come accross, and they could wake you up from your daydream. By that I mean if you stand still for a while, your Pawns would walk up to you and wave their hand in front of your character's face as if they are saying "Hello? Anybody there?".

Dragon Age: Inquisition
Different Choice, Different Epilogue

The small detail in this game could be seen when you completed the main storyline, in the epilogue part. Yes, the epilogue will change depends on your decisions, but this one is kinda unexpected.

In the War Table, the player--the Inquisitor--would faced with political and non political issues that happen throughout Ferelden and Orlais in which the player could choose between three choices on how to deal with them; with connection that involve the help of allies, with secrecy that will have the Spymaster deal with them for you, or by seding your forces. Depends on which method the player used the most, the epilogue would be different. For example, if you completed the War Table operations with secrecy (Secrets) more often than the other two, the epilogue will say;

"It has eyes and ears in every hall. No secrets are beyond its reach, and that knowledge has become the source of its power."

If the player used Connection the most;

"Its web of influence is felt in every hall. Through diplomacy and the trading of favors, it has gathered the power to shake kingdoms."

If the player used Forces the most;

"Its military might has grown, now rivaling that of kingdoms. Fear of the Inquisition's army has become the true source of its power."

And if the three method were balanced;

"It trades in secrets as easily as it does favors. Its military might is feared, and its power is without question."

Dishonored
Changing Painting

In the beginning of the game, after you play hide and seek with the young Emily Kaldwin as a quick tutorial you'll go to meet Empress Jessamine Kaldwin in the gazebo. On your way up there, you'll come accross Anton Sokolov who is painting the portrait of High Overseer Campbell. Next to High Overseer Campbell there is a bottle of brandy.

Now for the surprise, try not to forget what you do in this section--do you take the brandy or not. If you decide to take it they won't get mad or anything, so that's okay and you can proceed.

Later in the game during one of the missions that take place in the Office of the High Overseer, you can get into High Overseer Campbell's secret chamber and find his painting hanged there. Pay attention to the painting, if you took the brandy bottle when you first met him, it won't appear in the painting.

Red Dead Redemption
Talk Beside the NPC While Moving

In some games, there is a part where you would walk with an NPC during a mission or something and having conversation with them. You may have noticed something annoying in it; their speed. In some games the NPC will walk faster than you so you need to run for only about two steps to keep up with them for a couple of times, or the other way around.

Red Dead Redemption deal with this little problem by giving the "match speed" feature. When you are riding on horses alongside an NPC and press A (on Xbox) or X (on PlayStation) your horse will get closer and match the speed to the NPC you are talking to. So you won't have that problem anymore. Although it's on horse not on foot, imagine how bad would it be if you have to gallop-slow down-gallop-slow down-gallop-and so on when you're at it.

GTA V
Giving the Finger

I... feel bad for putting this here under the title "Brilliant", but it's funny. And rude. And funny. You can drive around Los Santos and raising your middle finger to anyone in the street like you raise a cup for a toast for who knows what reason.

Well, given how crazy the main protagonists of GTA V that's probably not something so unusual for them, especially Trevor. Except Franklin. Better(?) yet, people will react differently when you give them your lovely middle finger. Sometimes they just carry on, or talk trash to you back, or even got their skin crawl that they start crashing your car with theirs like it's a Crush Gear (remember that show?), pull you out of your car and fight you. That's what people would do in real life, I guess.

BioShock Infinite
Lutece Twins' Easy to Miss Hidden Dialogue

If it's brilliant (small) detail of BioShock Infinite, probably the most noticeable would be Elizabeth's smart AI. But, Elizabeth is not the only the most "alive" character in BioShock Infinite, the twins Robert and Rosalind Lutece too.

When you meet them in the throwing coin scene, they will not disappear and just standing like on the picture above when it's done. If you stand long enough in front of them, Rosalind will say "We won't leave until you do. You have my words on that." and "He does show a certain lack of initiative."

And when you meet them again in a bar where Rosalind is holding a tray with a bottle of Infusion on it and Robert cleaning up the bar, after all the dialogue is done, if you shoot them they will not die and it will trigger a hidden lines instead;

(Booker shoot at one of them)
Rosalind: "You missed. (shoot again) Missed."
Robert: "You'll find the going tough enough without squandering your friends."
Rosalind: "Or your ammunition."
(Booker shoot again)
Rosalind: "Missed again. (shoot again) Four out of five? (shoot again) Another miss. (shoot again) And a miss."
Robert: "We can afford to do this all day."
Rosalind: "The question is, can you?"

Dying Light
Sticky Notes Reminder

If you played Dying Light you probably know that there is a guitar that you can interact to but can't play any song and later you can if you find a music book. Pretty cool detail, right? Well, there's one more thing, one other small detail you may miss because it's not something you can interact to.

In Crane's room in the Tower, there is a computer desk in front of that guitar. Pay attention to the board behind it and you can see that Crane's been learning since the beginning. Each new enemy you meet in the game will add the pictures of them on the board, full with their name and the short descriptions below them. Although they are not readable, it's still awesome. I wonder when did Crane had the time to take their pictures, though.

I agree, some of the detail in games is amazing, especially when you notice it. They have really stepped it up to bring us a great gaming experience, I for one appreciate it :)

I really appreciate it too. I mean, the developer spent some extra time to create something that the players will probably ignore or don't even notice most of the time.

Exactly, Its pretty decent, Its great when you discover something like that

This is a great post. Games now go into so much details that the everyday player wouldn't notice. But it's awesome that you have thank you for providing our community with this content. You are helping us to grown

Thank you! Happy to be of help. I like looking for stuff like this in games, eventhough it won't affect the game progression it's just... neat.

Ooo good list. Those details are like easter eggs, except it keeps the continuity.
