5 Things We Miss About Gunbound (Original)

in #gaming9 years ago (edited)

Hey guys, welcome back to yet another gaming post and this time it's on a pretty old online game called Gunbound. It was released by Softnyx many years ago and it was pretty popular.

Looks like GunBound is in Season 3 now, but we stopped playing on the first season (back then there were no seasons).

What is GunBound?

It's a turn-based game where you team up and battle against your opponents. It's a 2D game whereby the players are all put in a map and each player has their own "robot". Each bot has a different attack and a different SS (special attack).

To attack, you need to hold space and the bar represents power and distance. For e.g. you hold until half of the bar is filled, the attack will be shot with half the distance.

To put it simply, it's a game of skill and estimation. You need to estimate how much power you use in order to attack the enemy. It's easy to miss of course. You have to also estimate the angle of your attack. Is it 45 degrees? Is it 20 degrees? You'll learn once you've more experience playing.

Wind was a big, big factor as well. You need to judge the angle to shoot considering where the wind was blowing. The wind hugely affected your attacks.

However, the game became boring when "formulas" came about. These formulas take into account the wind and distance and tell you exactly how much strength to use and which angle. We stopped playing after that.

Here are some of the things we miss about GunBound.

1. Cute avatars

Similarly with Maple, GunBound has cute 2D avatars as well but they aren't as cute as Maple of course (as the latter has facial expressions).

You can buy all kinds of armor in the cash shop and if we remember correctly, the gold armor and the chief indian headpiece were the IMBA items. They basically absorbed a lot of damage or dealt a lot of damage. Can't remember exactly.

Basically cute avatars were the in thing for gaming back then?

2. It took real skills to play

What we loved about Gunbound was how it actually required skills to win, not just pure brainless grinding.

We had to judge the exact angle for the shot, choose the right weapon (weapon 1/2/SS), judge the wind movement (as it changes every damn time) and judge the distance between yourself and your opponent.

Sometimes you can even shoot the ground so that the opponent falls to his death! Ah the good old days.

Furthermore, each bot you use has its own attack which may differ greatly. For e.g. some bots only have direct attacks, where you can always "shotgun" the enemy. Others are more difficult, especially Boomer with its totally different style of attack, which brings us to point 3.

Boomer

Boomer is a pretty awesome bot and normally only the "pros" could use it. The funny thing is, when you have an opponent using a boomer, he's either extremely bad or really good with it.

The two extreme ends. You can't use boomer for a direct shot as it works like a boomerang. You have to shoot it up and it bounces back in a certain angle (calculated) to hit the opponent.

That's why it takes so much skill. That's of course until formulas came out and many people started using them. It spoilt the game so we left.

4. The BGM music in the waiting room

Until today, we can still remember the BGM music playing in the waiting room. Before we get to battle we'll of course wait in the waiting room.

We have to choose our bots or just pick randomly and also whether we want to buy more grenades for the match.

As we've been in so so so many waiting rooms, we can still remember the music as it's always the same music.

5. Making friends

In any online game, making friends is crucial to the whole enjoyment of the game. When you have friends, you look forward to playing everyday and chat with your online friends.

You can also play and team up together when you have your own group of friends. Games, in our opinion, are boring when played alone.

As Gunbound was released years ago, we got our school friends to join and kinda introduced them to the whole new world of online games. After GunBound, we jumped to MU Online, Maple Story, Runescape and so on.

Our friendship bonds became greater as well thanks to online games.

In a nutshell

There are many reasons why we love and miss GunBound but that's all for today. It's also probably the first online game that we've played.

Thanks so much for reading!

I haven't played this game in years - so I do remember the 'good old days'. ;c)

One thing that I really liked about the game was that rounds could be really short - and there were no consequences to losing (besides gaining less).

This meant that it was perfectly fine to take a beating in subsequent games - and wear money-boosting items and the like.

It also made you feel like a boss to play 'random' - just in case you got a premium bot.

I do recall there being an overly restricted playing field once people got beyond the beginner areas. Most rooms were simply 'locked'.

So one had to create one's own room and wait for players to join.

It had room for improvement but it was a nice worms-like. ^_^

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Ah i forgot about those premium bots. I think it was the knight and the dragon. Only got it like once though.

Definitely brings back memories.

Thanks for dropping by!

There was also the red Falcon. ;c) I think the knight was the horse-like one.

I also seem to recall a dark green-ish "golem"-like one. Very rare.

One thing that I don't miss is the time it often took to load the updates back then. :cP

Have a great day. :c)

I've never heard of this game, but looking at a couple of those screenshots it does remind me of a different video game I wasted a lot of time playing when I was younger -- Worms. But that classic had only local multiplayer. Gunbound appears to be a worthy online successor.
