BIOMUTANT
On the second day of this year's Gamescome we had the opportunity to play a short demo for the upcoming Biomutant. And when we write short, we mean it literally. If you did not keep up with detailed character creation or detailed environmental exploration, it could take 15 minutes. We just tasted the game, but the authors obviously cared to include everything essential. During the day, we also visited a summary of THQ Nordic games, but we did not find anything new about Biomutant.
At first we were greeted with a character-creation screen. This was very detailed, unlike the rest of the demo, and looked almost complete. Obviously, it is an important thing for the authors to care about. First, a big circle will strike you in the eye. In it you can mix your own ratio of basic parameters, such as strength, skill, intellect, charisma and vitality. Such an approach is very intuitive - you can imagine your character's abilities without complicated numerical data. There is a clear trend to make the game as open as possible.
As you change these properties, you are dynamically changing your character's structure. It works just as you imagine, so it will increase your muscles while the intellect blows your head. It's playful, original and looks good. However, if you are just a detailist and an RPG enthusiast, you can also find the exact number of selected properties on the right. Well, then just some cosmetic color adjustments and it's about the thing.
The game itself is brisk, very smooth and in the very first minute you feel like a perfectly mutated ninja. So you get to the game literally within a few seconds, which is hand in hand with the already mentioned availability. But the demo was deliberately relieved and simplified. It was enough to press X on the controller repeatedly and the enemies fell one after another. The battle system itself is probably the most reminded of the Arkham series, though highly crazed. The authors have not forgotten the slow shots, so you can get really good with the sophisticated animations. We can not guess how the very initial setting of the parameters affects the character in the match. In dem, we basically attempted only a close combat with a base weapon. Authors in the final promise a large number of available weapons to offer infinite possibilities.
At first we found ourselves in a radioactive environment that was overgrown with a rich flora and here and there a ruined building appeared. The appearance of the environment and the game itself is finally best seen in pictures and videos. After the destruction of a few hairy enemies, we have also got to their bigger friend, but we can easily dispose of it with the right push of the buttons. After obtaining a special iron gauze we were able to get through the closed door. This mechanism had to be used more than once during demo, when hold of the X button caused a stronger stroke. Like cracking and racking the game, the game exaggerates and enhances the charming and brisk gameplay.
The game accompanied us with a voice without a face, who was here and there to advise whether he had just launched a witty message. The game is just trying to make a smile on your face and absurdity is its greatest weapon. Progress on the map was a tunnel. You move from one area to another, clear your enemies, and swiftly dump the country. Loss on the walls is unrealistically fast, but thanks to that, very responsive and we have come to ourselves as we just jump from place to place. Analog control levers are created for this purpose. Or it is better to say that the game was created for them.
Approximately in the middle of the demo we meet a friendly figure - Gizma. He promises us a mechanical metal suit if we can get parts from an adjacent infested area. There was a critical shortage of oxygen waiting for us and we had to move with the run. So it's another game mechanic that the demo has introduced to us and suggests that the game will take you once in a while. After successfully gaining components and quick fixes, we could choose the look of the armor where there was a varied selection - pink with a beak or some hair. We have not paid much attention to this, since it was just a cosmetic choice and we did not want to waste time. But if you like everything to your liking, the game will allow you to play in all directions.
Even after mocking, we continue to use attacks from near and far from the distance. However, they are now much stronger, and the missiles are doing a good AOE. Soon we found ourselves in a boss fighte with a brilliant World Eater, which has everything in the game as a name. After we shot a couple of rockets in it, we were surprised. Our suit broke and a gigantic bad guy just got us to eat! Our character found himself in Dead Eater's stomach, from which it was necessary to shout like the outside of the walls and to kill some worms, eh. Well, just another absurdity and, of course, accompanied by a queer commentator.
It will not surprise you that it all ended in the way the Dead Eater disproved us and we were back with bare or efficient jumps. But this was probably the most difficult part of the whole demo, as it was necessary to move skillfully and once we even died. But as it is customary in similar games, automatic save has returned exactly where we left off.
Graphically, the game looks nice, colorful and fairy tale. It's exactly the style that can be expected with a similar title. As we can see, we played on the Xbox controller, but we suspect the game was running on a PC hidden under the table. In this case, however, it is somewhat absurd to break your head with power on consoles. Undoubtedly it will run as fast. Overall, we can say that Biomutant left us with positive feelings. It will also appeal to a younger audience, and for long evenings it can be a good refresher, an interesting story and the world.
