Most Expensive Games (Standalone, Bundle, & DLC) On Steam (2017)

So what exactly is the most expensive game on Steam?

It’s sounds like a simple question but it can be hard to explain.

Firstly let me be clear about something:

Some of them are RIDICULOUSLY expensive!

I was pretty shocked by some of them and I think you’ll be surprised too.

And before you say “the most expensive games on Steam is such an easy question to answer! You just filter by price!”.

Oh yeah good point maybe it is that simple!

Spoiler: It’s not.

For starters we’ve had to put all the categories into their own lists (we don’t think it’s right to have software and game bundles in the same list for example).

Secondly you may well be forgetting the important bit about all of this…

…downloadable content.

It’s a contentious topic which was made even more contentious after EA’s Battlefront 2 nightmare and we have had to separate games including all their DLC into another list, otherwise there would be no competition!

Anyway, enough of this, let’s dive right in!

Most Expensive Game on Steam

Our first list is nice and simple. What exactly is the most expensive game on Steam?

Well at number 1 on the list is:

1) Emission VR

Price: £75.99
Developer: VRSpec Team
Release Date: 01/12/16
Tagline: “Kill as many zombies, go through as many corridors as possible. And all this in virtual reality!”

If you’re sat there thinking you’ve never heard of it…

…that makes two of us.

This is a virtual reality game (as you may have guessed from the not so subtle title and name of the developers) playable on the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

It’s a zombie thriller and the main objective is to kill as many zombies as possible and navigate your way through all the games “corridors”.

For such a pricey game it’s only got a tiny 6 reviews and even then, only 2 are in English. There’s one positive and one negative and if the negative review is to be believed then this game was much cheaper at release.

From what we can tell it looks like they have given up on updating the game and made the price so high to hopefully grab the odd purchase here and there.

Looks like the most exciting thing about this game is it’s ridiculous £75 price tag. Shame for this to be at the top of the most expensive games on Steam but there you go, can’t win them all can we.

Moving swiftly on to number 2…

2) Crazy Stone Deep Learning – The First Edition

Price: £60.99
All Reviews: “Positive”
Developer: UNBALANCE Corporation
Release Date: 26/05/16
Tagline: “Crazy Stone has made a huge step forward by combining Deep Neural Networks with Monte Carlo Tree Search.”

This is described as a casual strategy game but from what we can tell it is in fact the absolute opposite of casual.

It’s a digital version of an ancient board game (we’re talking 2,500 years old) that we now know as Go.

To give you a bit of information on Go (we didn’t know what it was either, don’t worry) we went to the British Go Association.

They told us that “Like Chess, Go is a game of skill – it has been described as being like four Chess games going on together on the same board”.

From what I can tell it takes a fair bit of practice before you master the game and according to the reviews this version is not for beginners.

I have a funny feeling it’s not for me, but it gets good reviews, so I don’t want to be too hard on it.

If that’s what you enjoy playing, then don’t let anyone stop you!

That doesn’t change the fact that this game is 60 quid. A board game for your PC and it’s 60 quid.

I don’t care who you are, that’s too much money.

3) X-Plane 11

Price: £54.99
All Reviews: “Very Positive”
Developer: Laminar Research
Release Date: 30/03/17
Tagline: “The future of flight simulation is now! X-Plane 11 is the detailed, realistic, and modern simulator you’ve been waiting for. Intuitive user interface, 3-D cockpits, new effects, 3-D sound, living airports and world-wide scenery.”

I had a feeling there would be a simulation game in this list and here it is.

I don’t have the patience for games like these

I’ve not heard of this one personally but it gets good reviews and I’m not a huge fan of the genre so it could be a well-known title and I wouldn’t have heard of it.

From what we understand this really is a proper simulation game and it has quite a steep learning curve if you’re used to older titles or more mainstream simulation games.

Out of the most expensive games on Steam so far this is the one that surprises me the least, these games have always been pricey.

4) Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

Price: £49.99
All Reviews: “Very Positive”
Developer: Spike Chunsoft Co Ltd
Release Date: 26/09/17
Tagline: “A new cast of 16 characters find themselves kidnapped and imprisoned in a school. Inside, some will kill, some will die, and some will be punished. The second game on our list that is actually popular! Danganronpa V3 is an adventure game and it gets great reviews!

I hadn’t heard of it myself but it’s had over 1,500 reviews to date and many of those reviewers have over 100 or even 200 hours on record for the game.

One review even accepts that the game costs a lot and then states “I don’t even regret buying it for that price” so maybe it’s worth it.

To be fair we are getting into the realms of acceptable prices. I’m not happy forking out £50 for a game either people, but it’s the world we live in!

5) Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon

All Reviews: “Very Positive”
Developer: KOEI TECHNO GAMES CO LTD
Release Date: 24/10/17
Tagline: “A Tale of Three Beautiful Maidens Drawn to Each Other. When three friends, deceived and separated by the tricks of darkness, find each other again, their bond shall become the light that will clear away the shadows and guide them towards the truth…”

At fifth in our list of most expensive games on steam is yet another game I have never heard of.

Nights of Azure styles itself as a RPG and again it gets good reviews, either I’m out of the loop or these games are only for people of a certain taste…

…there’s a lot of half-naked women in them that’s all I’m saying! (I know you now want a quick look, it’s fine go ahead, no judgement from me you pervert!)

To be fair to the game, Steam user Mordeth Kai brings up a good point saying:

“Let’s discuss why this game is superior to trash being shovelled out right now:

1: No microtransactions. No loot boxes, no cash shop, no in-game adds. It has none of that F2P BS.

2: All DLC is included as part of the base game.”

Mordeth has a good point! It’s not a game I’d buy but at least it doesn’t charge a high price and only give you access to half a game unlike some other big names out there right now, not naming any names…

…OK fine it’s EA. I’m talking about EA.

Most Expensive Bundle on Steam

Prepare yourselves for some big numbers. Here’s where things get interesting! This time rather than just looking at the most expensive game on Steam we are looking at Steam bundles.

Before diving in let’s work out the difference between the most expensive game on Steam and the most expensive bundle.

“Bundles are a special discount on a set of products. If you already own some of the products contained in the bundle, purchasing the bundle will allow you to ‘complete the set’ , paying only for the products you don’t already own while still receiving the full bundle discount on each of those products”

We basically would argue it’s anything that is sold as a separate entity whilst being made up of other smaller standalone products. For example, maybe a Civilization 5 bundle would include the expansions plus all the scenario packs.

The important bit is that it’s a curated bundle created by the publishers of the game.

1) Eidos Anthology

First on the bundles list is this absolute monster. 56 games and a whole lot of DLC and extra bits too.

Correct me if I’m wrong but who loves Eidos so much that they’d drop nearly 700 quid on a collection of all their games? Seriously! Surely no one?

Some of the games in the bundle are great don’t get me wrong (Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Just Cause for example) but who feels the need to purchase the whole lot in one go I do not know.

2) The Codemasters Complete Collection

Price: £510.13

Tagline: “The Codemasters Complete Collection!”

Another bundle that is simply every game a developer has ever made put into one big pile.

Like the Eidos Anthology this package again includes some great games (Overlord!) but we can’t understand it here at Fully!

What scares me slightly about these is that people must be buying them. I can’t believe they would go to the bother of putting these together unless people are paying for them.

3) Rebellion Anthology

Tagline: “Spanning generations and genres, developers and series, the Rebellion Anthology offers award-winning, best-selling gameplay, from the tactical intensity of the Sniper Elite titles and the nefarious lair-building of Evil Genius, to the majestic strategy of the Lords of the Realm games.”

Not much more I have to say about these bundles. They annoy me a little bit to be totally honest with you. I feel like they take advantage of people wanting to complete their “collections”.

Maybe I’m being too harsh. Maybe there are people out there who find them helpful because they allow them to have a look and see exactly what games they need to buy to complete their collection.

4) Fantasy Grounds D&D Complete Bundle

Finally! A bundle that isn’t the same as the first three!

The games included are essentially programs that allow you to play D&D on your computer. I’ve never played it myself, but I think D&D is cool.

There are a lot of people out there that seem to have some big issue with admitting that, I don’t know why!

It doesn’t include every game they’ve ever made and there is a great line in the description that says, “You can further upgrade this package with the Ultimate upgrade”.

Imagine spending 333 pounds on a bundle of these games and then see that there is even MORE that you can buy.

5) Playism Bundle

No description on this one which doesn’t make my job too easy.

I haven’t heard of many of the games in this bundle… OK fine, I haven’t heard of any of them.

I hadn’t even heard of Playism, so I did a bit of research.

Playism is a digital distribution platform for PC games which was launched in May 2011. It focuses on attracting indie developers to its platform by offering services like localization, debugging, marketing and publishing for indie developers interested in releasing their games to foreign markets.

Interesting! I love indie games as much as the next man, but these are indie games from Japan. No wonder I hadn’t heard of them!

My first thought about this list is that it feels a bit odd including indie games in a massive list of other, not particularly related, indie games.

It also feels like having all the games put into one big list that costs over 300 quid isn’t exactly keeping in line with the whole “indie” thing but honestly I’m sick of looking at these bundles, bring on the ridiculously pricey DLC list!

Most Expensive Game on Steam (Including DLC)

Now for the big one, what exactly is the most expensive game on Steam when you include all of the DLC possible.

Some of the other totals were impressive but this is where it gets really silly.

If we were to add up every game in the Steam catalogue with its respective DLC we would have quite a list.

So rather than list everything we are just going to show you the main offender.

Prepare yourselves…

Train Simulator

Price: £4610.69
All Reviews: Mixed
Publisher: Dovetail Games
Release Date: 12/07/09
Tagline: “Ever dreamed of driving trains? Now you can! Train Simulator 2018 brings to life some amazing train challenges on real world routes and delivers the ultimate railway hobby.”

Unbelievable right? Over 4 and a half thousand pounds for every single piece of DLC on top of the main game.

I have actually played Train Simulator. When I was still at school I went over to mate’s house and he had a copy.

I can confirm, it is about as exciting as you would expect and I can also confirm, we are no longer friends.

You drive trains from place to place as I’m sure you can guess.

And it’s not even like truck simulator where you can move on the road, you drive around on the train tracks for goodness sake.

I’ve put a screenshot below that helps show the madness but honestly go see it for yourselves here, it’s worth a quick trip to Steam.
