Gaming Culture: Were Old Games Better, or is it just Nostalgia?

in #gaming7 years ago

Were Old Games Better, or is it just Nostalgia? - We’ve all heard this one before. “Games were great back in my day, all the new ones are bad”. But is it actually true? Are new games just a succession of lootbox ridden repetitive open world blandness with no creativity, whereas years ago they still had a spark of uniqueness? Let’s explore this idea.

Old games were like a puzzle. Before the internet, you were pretty much on your own to figure out what is going on with the gameplay and the several secrets there may have been.

Spending hours in finding a way to abuse the system or discover an easter egg felt very rewarding.

Today you can find all the answers online. There is no reward for finding a flaw and abusing it and secrets are no longer secret.

The gameplay has improved tremendously. So did the visuals. There is just no mysticism about them.

I think nowadays it takes a bit more to learn a new game. They keep adding more and more layers but if you stick with it they are as fun as older games.
But.....
Sometimes it's nice to just play a simple game like Stardew Valley which as you know is based on the original Harvest Moon games which I loved!

I actually don't think that games are 'worse' now, it's a combination of selective memories and a diversification of the gaming scene.

By selective memory I mean; we tend to remember old games as good simply because we only remember the good ones. I've played my fair share of bad-old-games, but I don't really think of them and so don't make mental comparisons to the more contemporary games.

And finally, when I say 'diversification of the gaming scene' I simply mean that there are so much more genres possible now that were not possible in the past. Those of us that grew up on older games are more likely to have played games with deep immersive stories, (Chrono Trigger anyone?) These storylines are not really that possible in the newer games that focus on PvP such as Call to Duty or other esports titles, sure some of these games do have a storyline, but nothing as deep.

This at least, is an explanation of why I tend to remember old games much more fondly. And also why I fell in love with Mass Effect, Dragonage, The Elder Scrolls etc etc.

Depends. Graphically and world-size, definitely not! But I think that most games these days, at least AAA ones, are the equivalent of Michael Bay movies, flashy, but shallow as hell, most of the times way too hand-holdy, even if they're as easy as breathing.

I think that alot of older 90s and early 2000s games have alot more soul put into them. You can still find that today, but the gems are buried into so much shit in the indie scene, that it puts too many people off.

Yes, some stuff was worse, but I think that, as you say, is that games that were talked about in the press were actually good, whereas today, they're actually some social justice propaganda, or a glorified gambling den.

Some games are short and sweet like the old ones the new ones these days get a little complex, Nothing wrong with going to the old...
