Retro Review - Threads Of Fate

SquareSoft was a company that created a lot of excellent games, even after the union with Enix and formed the great Square Enix continued to develop and create wonderful games that today are considered the best of the video game industry, although this company is no longer what it was in its best years, still maintains a great respect for fans. As I said before, SquareSoft has under its label great and excellent games, that with just seeing them we can know first hand that this is a game of this developer, but in turn, due to the great catalog of video games that have made, many of them went unnoticed by the view of the player, the game I will talk about then I played relatively less than a year ago and certainly is a real jewel.

Today's Retro Review is about: Threads Of Fate.

The story of Threads Of Fate focuses on two characters with two different stories, but they are united by something in common: The search for a relic that will help them complete their tasks. These two characters are: Rue, he is a young warrior who after a fight against a man who was armed with a giant claw, this man kills his friend Claire, in an attempt to protect Rue, from this vile act, our protagonist is in search of this ancient relic to resurrect her friend.

On the other hand, this our other protagonist: Mint, she is a princess with a personality not so nice. Mint is also in search of this relic after her younger sister, by a plan against her, caused Mint to be exiled from the kingdom. Being in total frustration at not having enough power to take revenge on her sister, she decides to go in search of this object that will help her return to her power and even more.

As it is to suppose the adventures of our two protagonists are not going to be easy, to find this ancient relic is possibly the most difficult thing that they are going to do in their life, but in order to fulfill what they proposed themselves they are not going to let themselves be defeated by the adversities. When starting the game we must choose which character to start the story, each story is individual, therefore we must complete the story of one character and then start with the other.

If there was something that SquareSoft games stood out for, it was in their large and varied color palette, Threads Of Fate is proof of that, since in this game we are going to be able to witness the use of not only a large number of colors in both characters and scenarios, but also that the colors used have a high level of colorfulness, so that visually it is a fairly eye-catching game.

Besides this, Threads Of Fate has a very characteristic artistic style, you could say that his artistic style is part of the seal of SquareSoft, the characters have designs "chibi", ie typical designs where the character has the small body and big head or to put it another way, presents an anime design, something that is completely the opposite with the plot itself, because although the artistic style of this game is a little childish, its plot is quite the opposite, since we are dealing with a game whose plot is quite mature.

You could say that, the artistic style of Threads Of Fate is the best worked aspect and I'm not only talking about the artistic style within the game, I'm also talking about the conceptual art of the game itself, as expected in this developer's games, the level used when creating characters and creating conceptual art is splendid.

In the same way, although Threads Of Fate maintains the classic PlayStation 1 polygons, their characters have enough charisma and personality to be totally recognizable, and they are presented with a level of fluidity of movement quite good and consistent with the gameplay, since we are dealing with an Action RPG.

I don't have much to say about the sound aspect of this game that I haven't said in previous games of this company, since Threads Of Fate maintains the same excellence in sound quality throughout the game, with a great list of environmental and orchestral melodies, making it a more than excellent game in this aspect, so I invite you to listen to their excellent soundtrack that is up to what I represent Square in its time.

Threads Of Fate is an Action RPG, but it has very few characteristics of RPG games, that is to say, our characters will not be able to improve the statutes as: force, magic attack, physical attack, resistance or any other characteristic attribute of RPG games, since we will only be able to buy equipment that allow us only to improve the defense or attack of our characters, besides that at the end of each combat our bar of life or magic is going to increase according to the damage that we have received or the amount of magic that we have used in battle. More than an Action RPG from the classic Threads Of Fate, it's a bit more like the classic games from The Legend Of Zelda or even Alundra (another excellent game).

The combat system is very simple, it won't cost us anything to learn to use our characters, which as I said in the beginning we can use two protagonists. Rue carries an axe to eliminate his enemies and his special ability is to transform himself into the enemies he has defeated and in the meantime, Mint can use different types of magic and as we advance in the game, the greater the types of magic spells he will learn.

As expected in this type of games we will find a lot of puzzles to solve and overcome certain obstacles, to solve some of these puzzles we will need the skills of our protagonist, for example, Rue, whose ability is to become their enemies, must become a certain enemy to overcome a certain obstacle and Mint, she must sometimes use her magic powers to solve a puzzle and overcome that obstacle.

Generally, Threads Of Fate is a fairly simple game, the battles are dynamic and it is very easy to learn the use of our character and the pattern of attack and movement of enemies and final bosses, also let's find some sections of platform that will give much more life to the scenarios that has to offer this so good game.

Threads Of Fate is an excellent game of what was previously an excellent game developer company, there are many titles that has under its seal SquareSoft and many of them are going to last with the passing of the years as emblematic titles of an entire era.
