If you've never played Diablo, it might be worth your time

The franchise is great. Lore, gameplay, replay value, visuals... But is it for you? Read on and find out.

Diablo I

A lot of fun. Nearly-zero grind. Available in GOG.com. There is also a High Definition mod to take the graphics to the next level and add a few new quests, which I throughtly recommend.

But even if you play just the original release, you'll spend at least a few hours to beat the game in normal difficulty. It offers really good gameplay (specially) for it's age.

Most of the lore is presented through "scrolling text" from books you find while diving through the 16-level dungeon, but it's very immersive and the voice acting is great.

You will spend most of your time within the single town's underground, which presents new styles, themes and foes as you advance. A literal descent into hell you can go through solo or while partying up with up to 3 other players.

Trying Nightmare difficulty (aka NewGame+) will offer you a more challenging and fun version of the game which you can enter with the same character you used to beat Normal difficulty, including inventory, gear and character level/stats.

Once you beat Nightmare, you might have to grind a beat for Hell difficulty (aka NewGame++), when things get really complicated. But just beating Normal game is very, very satisfying.

Diablo II

Everything Diablo 1 offers, gloriously expanded. Venture throughout the world of Diablo, chasing someone from the original game who is unwillingly setting chaos upon the world. Track this person, trying to catch up as they travel east.

Go through the consequences of the events set in motion in very different territories, from a city considered as the Jewel of the Desert to the Barbarian homelands in the far, cold mountains.

Meet many charismatic characters whose names you will remember, despite only chatting with them through text. The Lord of Terror is not alone this time. Encounter his brothers, the Lord of Hatred and the Lord of Destruction.

Besides the Prime Evils, fight the corrupted undead and even rogue agents, everything presented along with a lot of delightful lore within text books, cinematics and ingame sequences... Do it along with up to 7 other players in the same game!

The Expansion Pack is mandatory because of how good it is and what it adds, but a lot of replay value is added thanks to incredible mods made by the community - including but not limited to increased parties, alternative lore, new enemies and expanded/revamped classes and skill trees.

Normal/Nightmare/Hell difficulties are present again, offering an increasingly challenge, which you will experience in very different ways depending on which character class you chose to become.

Diablo III

Nearly zero lore experience. You can beat the main campaign within an hour and you'll be done with it forever. Generally, it's pretty, slightly arcade-like and it kind of sucks after getting used to D1 and D2.

D3's focus is endless grind, because it's designed as an online-only 4-player coop game that can entertain you for a great stretch of time. It does a good job doing it for a while as you compete for seasonal rewards for climbing from level 1 while adapting to patch changes.

It is a Blizzard-Activision game. It's original team was fired in favor of using World of Warcraft's development team. It ditches most Diablo-exclusive gameplay from the previous games.

If you want to get it just for the lore, it might be too hard on your wallet. Just watch a campaign playthrough on YouTube.

A nice read! So, Diablo II is the best experience. I should stay away from Diablo III. And Diablo IV has filled the fans minds with hope and worry.

Yes, D2 is the best, but D1 still offers a really good experience, very different from D2. D4 gives us more hope than worry. Hopefully it will be alright...

Hey @felipejoys, here is a little bit of BEER from @eii for you. Enjoy it!
