Diablo 4 brings it's dark tone back - except not really

in #gaming5 years ago (edited)

After being boo'ed during it's own conference, Activision-Blizzard decided maybe they should listen to their playerbase!

Diablo IV's world

The ingame enviroment has changed a lot from Diablo III. Dark is not the right word. Gruesome and cruel is much more fitting. It is beautiful in that aspect, for sure.

However, battles are too cartoony. Flashy moves and visual effects are all over the place. Battles are going to feel disconnected from the enviroment. We are simply not going not care much about monster design.

A demon's disgusting raw skin and all of the demonic rituals taking place fade away when we're busy smashing buttons arcade-style. Some of them are really gross, but it is all instantly forgotten as soon as numbers and visual effects are all over the place.

In God of War games, each fight is one with the lore, from minions to titanic foes. You can feel the power and magnitude in each of them. How significant they are in the world. Diablo IV does the exact opposite.

Lore and cinematics

An incredibly sudden change can be noted on the Official Announcement Cinematic Trailer. It is no longer in the style of World of Warcraft. But it is obviously not Diablo I or II either.

Again, it is much more gruesome than anyone would expect. It's like Activision-Blizzard is forcing themselves to fit into the expectations of those they do not understand.

But there is something else to it. The cinematic focuses on the characters, not the events. Diablo II cinematics showed us the impact events and main characters had on individuals in a psychological level. It was brilliant. Now... Not so much.

Diablo 4's hype gate

By visiting the official website, you will be confronted by a form, allowing only those who are over 18 to proceed. This serves as a really big mature content warning.

Certainly, Activision-Blizzard hopes to send everyone the message of "visual change". I am not hopeful about it, since it only portrays how different things are from what the playerbase wishes. I am dissapoint...

...Well, it doesn't meet all of our expectations, but Diablo IV is certainly a step forward.

Well, at least it's a step in right direction.
@tipu curate :)

Agreed. Thank you.

Never played a Diablo game before, are they too grindy?

Compared to like korean mmos - not at all :) you will slain thousands of daemons but the D1 and D2 atmosphere is so great that it's totally worth it.

Answering this throughly deserves a post of it's own, honestly...

I have to look more into Diablo IV. But more dark or gruesome is better than what Diablo III offered.
I am looking forward to it :D
