The Crow's Eye: Full Game Review For PC
Set against the backdrop of psychological terror, The Crows Eye is a first-person puzzle adventure game in which you will use your wits to escape the abandoned University of crows wood whilst investigating the mysterious disappearances of student and faculty 20 years earlier. Develop by 3D2 Entertainment, the crows eye is an interesting game. It's not quite a horror game lacking any monsters or really that many jump scares and it's not quite a proper puzzle game either as there's never any punishment if you fail.
GAME PLAY
What it is however is an intriguing and unnerving journey through a series of dimly lit environments is rent agonized by former university professor with an unclear motive. Largely taken influence from other games like amnesia the Dark Descent with an art deco aesthetic feeling very similar to the Bioshock games. Even down to the various audio logs you find scattered around the university complete with portraits for each of the characters they pertain to.
The crows eye does have a story though it is a little bit confusing at first so if some guy I'm not even sure we're given a name who wakes up without any recollection of recent events as far as I could tell and you have to journey through the university for answers. Early on in the game the plot focuses on two main characters the detective named Benjamin pendant and the previously mentioned batshit-crazy University professor a man named William Holt wick.
The guy during hope McCoy sounds like he's doing the best impersonation of Mark Hamill's Joker and a few of the lines I think are unintentionally funny because they're just how over the top it Most of the other voice work is pretty solid though it's just a little bit dry and uninteresting. You will be captivated to an extent to the mystery behind the events in the game it's just that like I said before it's often very confusing to follow what exactly is supposed to be going on.
Hopefully kind of serves as the villain of the game and he often narrates your journey through the University in between frequently forcing you to solve puzzles to progression and credit where credit is due some of these puzzles are actually quite well designed.
Most of the puzzles just boiled down to common sense and finding the right item most of the time which happens to be in the same room as the puzzle itself but they're still working sections I got stuck on mostly because I just overlooked something that was staring me in the face.
There's a fair few platforming sequences where you're jumping from ledge to ledge off into a time sequence and about halfway through the game you get something called an electromagnet which serves as both a light source of the means to solve certain puzzles. The electromagnet being able to pull physics items towards the player well actually really only one item metal boxes but it can also be used on special pads to launch the player into the air to reach high ground and also to kind of lasso one for specific structures to clear otherwise unreachable gaps.
Earlier in the game you'll also get a syringe full of adrenaline which when activated gives you between 5 to 10 seconds of slow-motion during which time you can run faster and jump much further. For some reason - this syringe magically fills itself up when not in use which kind of devalues it a little bit but when you're forced to use all these abilities towards the end again during some of the more trickier platforming and puzzle sections it can take a bit of skill to get through them and some of them are pretty damn creative. I guess the only issue here is that there's only no sense of tension or fear during any of these moments.
To start like I said there's no monsters or anything life-threatening whatsoever and I think there's maybe two or three jump scares in the entire game most of which involve a piece of furniture falling over. During the after mention puzzle sections you're jumping over bottomless pits sure but if you happen to fall to your death the game's up I'm going to put you right back on the very same platform you just fell from at which point you're losing literally near seconds of game time.
Oddly, to those manual saves in the game but unless you're actually planning on cooking the game there's no real reason to use them as the games liberal checkpoint system is going to make sure you're never losing all that much time spent anyway. There's a few other ways engine again that kind of directs me in the crafting system though the item you need is for a very specific moment and the components are always a stone throw away. There's an inventory screen with a couple of dozen slots which I never even came close to filling up so why they've got that many slots is kind of beyond me.
Also, the game absolutely inundated with ingredients from making bandages for healing aside from also giving you syringes in the game as well which achieve the same result. I think by the end of the game I had like five or six bandages in about three or four syringes which are never even used. The only damage you'll take will come from falling off a platform that the game deems too high but again that's hardly going to kill you. There's also a lock-picking mechanic that's use all of three times in the entire game which again is kind of unfailable.
For a game when you're constantly collecting audio logs notes and all that kind of stuff it's a bit weird that they haven't included any kind of journal where you can go back and reread them if you need to. Like certain notes you come across are going to have combinations to say that if you don't jot these down well I can't think of how you go back to get them again unless you just load an old save file.
I do have a bit of a problem with the ending in the game which is about ninety percent exposition now look if you're at the end of a game and the entire thing is just filled with someone explaining why everything happened the way it did well then the writers aren't really doing their job properly. But look I don't want to be too harsh here I mean you do have to differentiate indie developers from triple-a developers and given the tools these guys had do not going to expect something on the level of a recent horror game like Resident Evil 7 and that's fair enough.
GRAPHICS AND SOUND
Visually, I think it looks like a bit of a cross between those two games as well it runs on the year of the engine and it's not the ugliest Unity engine game I've ever played but it sure ain't the prettiest either. There's only one of the character model you come across which happens to be used twice I might add and everything else is seen from a distance so it's hard to tell how much effort went into it. The lighting in the game gets the job done but that's about it, I mean it looks like a game made in 2007 though this was made intentionally to pay homage to its influences. A lot like Bioshock and amnesia this is a game about being trapped in a single location and having very little information as to your character's backstory.

Adventure, Horror, Puzzle Single-player 20 Mar, 2017 So if you want to be chased by an unstoppable monster jump out of your chair every three seconds to obnoxious jump scares or just generally play the kind of horror game that relies on facecam YouTube business, marketing tools well look elsewhere let's say if you're after a shooter horror game with a creepy atmosphere and a superb soundtrack with gameplay centered around completing a bunch of increasingly challenging puzzles well then the crows is worth taking a look at.
