Assassin's Creed Origins Hidden Ones Review - Back to Egypt

At the end of October we were pleasantly surprised by Assassin's Creed Origins. Ubisoft has worked a lot on the formula and put down a dike of a game. Now it's time for the first big DLC. Or of the same quality you can read in our Assassin's Creed Origins Hidden Ones review.

In the Hidden Ones DLC of Assassin's Creed Origins we travel to the Sinai region, located on the Red Sea. It is now four years later and the Assassin's Order - the Hidden Ones - has begun to stop any form of oppression. That just does not work well in the Sinai region, where the Romans rule hard and exploit and oppress the local population in various ways. So it is time for Bayek to bring personal matters to order and to make the highest officers a cup smaller.

The story of the Assassin's Creed Origins Hidden Ones DLC seems fairly superficial at first, but gets more and more profound as the story progresses. You notice in particular Bayek that he occasionally has some doubts about the future of the Hidden Ones and how he gets other people behind his vision. Bayek was already a star in the main game and, in our opinion, perhaps the best Assassin to date, and with his performance in the first DLC he confirms that again.

Less variation than hoped for

In the field of gameplay not much has changed. In the main missions you are mainly concerned with Roman oppression in the region, but although the Italian conquerors look different visually, they do not differ from their Egyptian counterparts in terms of enemies. We would have liked a bit more variation, because with a new faction to enemies, Ubisoft could certainly have done something original, such as applying Roman tactics in combat.

In the new side missions, anything and everything can happen as usual. We have again encountered a number of bizarre characters who then send us on the most insane missions that will stay with you for a long time to come. We will not spoil anything, but hopefully you are a camel fan.

In the DLC, value is also given to your collected materials, because each part gets a few upgrade levels, which you have to sacrifice a bit for. This also means looking for the infamous Carbon Crystals, which are fortunately less rare this time. In addition, the maximum level has been increased to 45, allowing you to unlock slightly more skills.

Two outstanding players in the region

Although the lack of variation in enemies is a bit disappointing, there is one other aspect to Assassin's Creed Origins Hidden Ones that disappoints us even more and that is the Sinai region itself. We have praised the world in the main game for its beauty and the many, many beautiful areas of the world, but the Sinai is a bit boring. The area consists mainly of bare mountains and quarries with many vertical differences and barely architectural miracles.

Fortunately, there are two exceptions to this and they immediately catch the eye when you walk past them, run or drive. The first tourist attraction is the Walls of the Ruler, a huge fort located on a mountainside, with as its only entrance a narrow bridge with a ravine on either side. Taking over the fort is not a simple task and you can also legitimately conclude that the strongest party in the region has this colossus in its hands.

The other gem is located in the northwest of the region and is a giant clock. At least, the way the ancient Egyptians could indicate the time: a sundial. The Arsinoe Sundial is a huge obelisk with hands, indicating the time of the day. Not only an impressive structure, but also a perfect way to view the region from above.

Conclusion

The question of whether you should purchase the Assassin's Creed Origins Hidden Ones DLC comes down to the question whether you have enjoyed Assassin's Creed Origins and would like to continue playing the story. After all, little has changed compared to the main game and with a story of nine to ten hours you get enough value from the purchase price of ten euros. We are in any case curious about the second DLC, The Curse of the Pharaohs, which will see the light of day in March.

The plus and minus points

✔ Interesting story
✔ Maximum level and upgrades increased
✔ Fun characters and sidequests
✔ Two beautiful buildings...
✖ ...but the Sinai region stands out for the rest
✖ No new variation in enemies

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!

Nice one! I got AC Origins and this DLC but I haven't tried it yet. I still want to finish the story but I great that's going to take me a very long time. I didn't about 10 hours in Siwa alone until finally moving on to Giza and Alexandria. I'm too busy taking pictures with the photo mode.

Good review. I was expecting just one or two added story missions but there is a whole lot more to it!
