[Visual Novel Review] One Last Chance

in #gaming6 years ago
(No Spoilers) A sweet short story about A salesman & a traveler artist. The two didn't act on their love ten years ago, and now it's Ben last chance.

One Last Chance developed by a small publisher. When I read the game description on Steam I thought it involved time travel, I was surprised find it's a down to earth slice of life story.

Story is very simple and realistic, the protagonist Ben is average salesman of UK with the goal of saving his company be having their already contract signed. He meets Tara, his classmate from ten years ago and together they reminisce on those years, and on their love they didn't act upon at the time.

Will you confess the love you didn't ten years ago?
The story is truly something we could relate too.

You're the perfect combination of logical and sweet.

Gameplay

This Visual Novel is closer to Kinetic Novels. Despite being labeled as "choices matter" & while you have many choices to make though the story, none of them changes the story route. Minor changes in Tara response to your choices. And the only major change is the ending parts. All of them are logical for the choices you make through the game.

Typical choices in the game!

Graphics are inconsistent, character designs are great. Tara, the girl you see for most of the game is one of the best designed characters for this type of game. Backgrounds are good enough. But UI is a bit lacking in my opinion. I feel if the developer worked more on that it'll be awesome. I'm quite sure the engine used TyranoBuilder can offer better UI than that.

But you can't ask for everything, don't you?

That doesn't take from the enjoyment but it feels even older VNs have more charming graphics & user interface.

Writing & Voices

The voice acting is amazing. Tara voice is full of emotions, my mood turns from happy to sad (and vice versa) just from listening to it. Tara & Ben dialog parts are well written, and the choices you're given are consistent with whatever ending you get.

The writing isn't the best thing I read, but it's still better than average. I didn't notice any typo, something I couldn't say about a game I loved more than this one.

The endings are various, and you know every thing is connected by how different they are, 'choices matter' while gives misleading impressions. By the end you'll know how that phrase suits the Visual Novel.

I have to say though,
the game deals with mature themes like marriage and divorce,
if you're not into that be careful.

Powerful Experience 'cause it's Short

The Visual Novel is short, less than 1 hour to get the first ending, and if you skipped the recurring parts it might take you 3 hours to get all endings. Depending on your budget, it might not worth it at full price ($3.99,) but I got it as part of bundle so I'm totally satisfied! and if you have company trouble or family problems you might relate to the character.

Younger & sweeter Tara.

  • I recommend for people who want down to earth Visual Novel to play, or those who are new to VN genre but don't want to try the masterpieces first. It also have multiple, endings and its fun to see what your choices change the end game.

  • I won't recommend to people who need the game to be perfect, other than Tara's design and voice everything seems low budget in comparison. I also won't recommend it to people who love special powers in their game. One Last Chance is the opposite of power fantasy.

Thanks for reading, I didn't know about this many lovers of VNs, they have a real charm somehow. I recommend Narcissu if you haven't played it, it's a piece of art.

Thank you very much! These types of curations give me more motivation to write reviews XD

Always nice when a small publishing can get out a somewhat decent product. I swear so many of them are just stuck in the limbo land of Beta their game will never see the light of day. Like they have to have everything perfect right down to the blades of grass in the game. To the point, if they ever get anything to market everyone has stopped caring and moved on.

Always great when a game has that one area it does really well in. Sometimes you wonder I they just lucked out with getting amazing talent or if that is where most of the budget went. I can see with this kind of game why the voice acting would be very key to the project.

It’s a shame that game Is only 1 hour long if you move fast in it. That might open them up to being spammed with returns. Which is never good for a small little guy.

I totally agree with your comment!! This game excells so well in its Voice actib to the way it overs almost all the flaws. I think the game is supposed to be played at least times so I can say it'll take 2-4 hours for average person to finish, which sadly is still short!

That's cool, never expected to see a VN review around here, those games aren't for everyone but it can be nice to read one every now and then... unfortunately I can't even remotely relate to the MC, but thanks for the review anyways :D

Oh, BTW, I'm starting to recruit members to create a decent community for anime & manga lovers... I need to setup some things but at least the discord is created already https://discord.gg/7JQruwm
I suppose we need to start spreading the love for japanese culture somewhere and didn't find anything so I'm making my own (Still need to make images, posts, and lots of other things)

Will hopefully join your Discord :)
