Legos + Firefly Expansion Boardgame = A Fun Evening

in #games7 years ago

On a visit back to Springfield a while back I got to hang out with @demetros and his roommate for an evening of gaming. I'd played the Firefly boardgame before and had an absolute blast. Often the nostalgic games have seemed to have a one and done feel. I'd play them once, find the memories of whatever the theme to be cool, then never open the box up again, not making the the best fifty dollar purchase.

Firefly however had some great game-play on top of being able to see the characters I love like Captain Malcolm, Wash and even his dinosaur. It's been a great one to go back to over and over with changing sets of objectives, which makes each game so far to have a very different experience.

But THIS time...

He brought out this HUGE tube telling me this time we were going to play with the "The Whole Damn Universe" expansion (costing around $200) which not only included new character cards and ships, but also an enormous six foot by three foot game board. It was rather impressive covering the entire table!

For those that hadn't caught my earlier post on the Firefly game the main gist is that you get to pick one of the ship cards, having differing attributes such as:

  • Engine Speed (number of squares you can move per turn)
  • Size of your Cargo Hold (where you keep passengers, fuel and/or cargo)
  • Size of your Stash (where you can keep illegal things like fugitives and/or contraband.)

This time I chose the newly available ship called S.S. Walden...cause it's @walden! My engine was average at best and couldn't be upgraded, but I could hold and haul a TON of stuff. Which sort of worked out, but I was one turn short from the really fast ship from winning at the end.

Around the game board you have ports where you can pick up jobs, hire crew, buy upgrades and refuel. Before the game an objective card is chosen (out of about 10) that tell the players what things have to be done to win that game. Examples include gaining a solid reputation with two contacts, acquire $6,000, get to a certain planet to deliver your acquired goal tokens and money to pay off your ship. Being able to have the win conditions change really help to keep it feeling fresh each time you play.

Overall, you acquire and complete jobs to get paid. However this could be rather difficult with each square you pass through having the possibility of being stopped by the Alliance Cruiser, Operative’s Corvette or a Reaver ship that can make bad things happen, setting you back.

So What About the Lego's?

As we were setting up @demetros's roommate brought out his impressive Lego collection. When I was young just having blocks with wheels on it or a generic Lego man was impressive, but I had too much fun with some that he had. He tried to make some additional rule to the Firefly game to incorporate the droids, but that was shot down due to it already being a bit imposing to learn for the new players (even though you pick it up after a couple turns.)

But I at least wanted to share a few of my favorite pictures of the Lego guys, which were even cooler being on the star specked background of the game-board.

I still highly recommend the Firefly board game, with or without the expansions (and Lego men.) It only takes a couple of turns to get the idea of how to play (even though it looks like a lot at the beginning) and will provide TONS of replay value. You'll absolutely find it worth the money!
