Minecraft Wintermute - The Nether HubsteemCreated with Sketch.

Wintermute is the name of the Survival Mode Minecraft server run by my friends and family. Wintermute has been online for a couple of years and the images below show the progress we have made on the Nether Hub.

My last post about SkyGate showed the Nether Portal Entrance at SkyGate. This time, we go through the Portal to check out the Hub hallways which are some of the most finely built Minecraft objects I have ever seen. Which is why I wanted to share this with you today. This is some truly incredible Minecraft design talent here.

What is the Nether Hub

There is a handful of players on Wintermute who all play regularly, we have each split up over very long distances in the overworld to build our bases. So all of the bases are connected by a series of Nether Portals. In the Nether Hub, there are several hallways designed to take players through the very hostile and violent Nether without any problems.

Each player base is more than an hour away from each other, but when traveling through the Nether, each block is worth 8 blocks in the overworld. So the Nether hub and the interconnecting hallways provide a fast, safe, transit system to all major bases around the world.

Going inside the Portal at SkyGate

Once you have entered the Portal at SkyGate, you will be transferred to the Nether hallway that will take you to the Nether Hub. Below is what the Nether Hallway for SkyGate looks like. It has some very nice carved stone columns, lined with glass and backed by sand stone. The floor consists entirely of slabs so that no bad guys can spawn up in here keeping it very safe. The hallway is a bit long so there is an powered minecart system there to help transport players quickly and effortlessly.

The Nether Hub

The Nether Hub itself connects all bases and the hallway associated with that base. So the Hub essentially looks like a giant room, with a series of hallways leaving the room in every direction. The portal in the middle of the hub leads back to the initial starting spawn point for the server. Below is the what the Nether Hub looks like at this point in time. Everything is built on slab so no bad guys will spawn and there are some elaborate entrances for each hallway that is uniquely designed.

The Nether

Anyone who has ever been to the Nether knows how violent it is. So each hallway is also lined on the outside with a layer of solid stone brick. So the hallways are very long, designed very nicely, and they have very thick walls providing the utmost protection.

Here is an image of what the Nether looks like and what one of the hallways looks like from the outside. The Nether essentially looks and feels like Hell. This section of hallway is not lined with stone brick. Some of the hallways will occasionally break out into open air walk ways like this so that you don't forget where you are. It is also done in more scenic areas where the Nether has created some interesting formations that are fun to look at as you whiz by on a powered minecart track.

Going Down the Various Hallways

Each hallway leads to it's own base. Some of these hallways are very long and take 10 minutes of travel by powered minecart! Meanwhile the distance traveled in the overworld is many hours. Each hallway has it's own unique design that has allowed the builders to express all sorts of interesting designs.

The Red Hall

The red hall below is crafted with some excellent red and black stripes, a long layer of red glass on one side of the hallway with a powered minecart track on the other. As you can see, this hallway is VERY long.

Green Hospital Hall

I call it the Green Hospital Hall because it is made mostly of green blocks with a bright yellow plus or cross in the middle of the wall. The lighting here is provided by the glow stone blocks.

Sand Mine Hallway

The sand mine hallway leads to our strip mining operation in the sand biome. It is built with warm colors, sand, sandstone, more glow stones and some other decorations. Again there is another powered minecart track running down one side of the hallway.

The Color Blast Hallway

This hallway covers the entire spectrum of color as you run down it, or ride down it on the powered minecart. When riding in the minecart, this one feels like a roller coaster.

The Lava Hallway

The walls of this hall are lined with lava pouring over the windows and that is what provides light. There is orange glass between you and the lava, don't worry. Despite the darkness, nothing will spawn here as it is all built on slabs.

The OceanBlue Hallway

This hallway leads to an XP farm high above the massive ocean. So the hallway was built with blues and grays in mind using lots of blue and gray glass. This is one of my favorites!

The Hallway of Illusions

This is my favorite hallway as it seems like you are walking on some sort of illusion. There is no lighting and the floor is built entirely of glass slabs. Where colored glass was used, you can see the floor, otherwise the floor appears to be a dark void of space. It seems like players would get stopped by those colored blocks ahead, but they don't, players just glide right over them.
