Bombshell Miniatures Review

in #games8 years ago

My experience with Bombshell Miniatures is largely through supporting Kickstarter campaigns, like with my previous company review post. Bombshell is a venture by sculptor Patrick Keith, who has also sculpted for Reaper Miniatures, Dark Sword Miniatures, Privateer Press, and many other game companies. He decided he wanted to create his own line of female minis, and his first Kickstarter campaign indicated enough community support to make it happen. This has resulted in expanding his product line through several additional Kickstarter campaigns.

The initial purpose of the company was the Babes. These miniatures are a bit larger than the 25mm and 28mm sizes most commonly used in role-playing games and war games, and are advertised as 32mm. Models are supplied with 30mm round bases, and resin scenic inserts are available. This line spans the spectrum of fantasy, alternate history, and science fiction. The Babes line is accompanied by Sidekicks, which includes assorted creature companions, robotic minions, and creepy critters.

The first non-Babes product was Counterblast, a sci-fi skirmish game and miniatures line with anthropomorphic creatures, evil aliens, robots, and of course a few more babes for good measure. The second is the Kritterkins, a set of cartoon-proportioned anthropomorphic animal miniatures that ooze cuteness.

The sculpting quality is top-notch. Most models are cast in a tin alloy. Resin Kritterkins models are hand-cast by the sculptor. The figures range from "classic pinup" to "dynamic badass" depending on the artist whose work inspired the sculpture. If you want cheesecake, there's cheesecake. If you want a female soldier wearing something resembling actual combat gear, you're covered. If you want a female mini who wears relatively practical sci-fi or fantasy armor, those are available, too. If you want a raccoon carrying a big gun and a sniper who rollerblades while chewing bubblegum, you're still in luck.

The website blog also includes production photos with commentary, fiction from the Counterblast universe, and news on upcoming projects. This is another small company seeking to serve the games market and I recommend that anyone who wants a miniature for a role-playing or war game hero should take a look.
