Introducing My New Diet and Why I'm Deciding To Share/Pursue This!!

in #gallerani6 years ago

I've said a few times before that I like to be metabolically flexible which basically just means that I like to change the nutrients that I put into my body every few months.

For about half the year I eat a "normal" diet that's rich in fruits and vegetables and other carb sources like pasta. I supplement all of that with tons of protein - chicken, steak, turkey, etc.

For the other half of the year I eat a modified version of the Ketogenic diet. The ketogenic diet, in a nutshell is as follows:

Ketosis is the body's way of protecting ourselves against starvation. Being hunters and gatherers, our ancestors weren't always able to consume food in the same way that we modern people do.

Today we are able to just go out to the supermarket or local McDonald's and pick up a quick bite to eat if we are feeling a little hungry. But back in the day, we had to hunt and forage for our food.

Our ancestors could sometimes go days or even weeks without any food to eat. The human body is amazing in that, we can go several weeks without food (although we eventually start to lose our minds and physical capabilities). One of the main driving forces for this ability is the process of Ketosis.

Ketosis is a metabolic adaptation that occurs when we don't consume food or consume a diet that's extremely low in carbohydrates (typically less than 50g for the average individual) and is measured by an increase in ketones in the body.

A Ketogenic diet or Keto diet is when we purposefully remove the carbohydrates from our body in order to induce a state of Ketosis.

Ketones are produced by the body as fuel (as opposed to glucose which is the primary source of fuel on a carbohydrate-rich diet).

Eating a diet that is low in carbs will induce ketosis and adding additional fat to that same diet will produce even more ketones which will provide more energy. Instead of using carbs for fuel, our body switches to using fat for fuel.

The body will prioritize dietary fat over stored body fat. Eating more fat in your diet will produce more ketones and give you more energy and will be burned before stored body fat.

Once your body has burned through your dietary fat intake, it will turn to your stored body fat. Our bodies are incredibly adaptable and that's why eating in a surplus will cause your body to store body fat - it's almost like your body is like a refrigerator that get's stocked up with food in preparation for a drought. Instead of food, your body is storing fat which can later be turned into ketones and burned as fuel.

There's a lot more that goes on with the ketogenic diet and I'll continue to make posts about all the great information out there. But the above is a pretty good gist of how the ketogenic diet works and why ketosis occurs in the body.

Is there anything about the ketogenic diet that you'd like to hear about more specifically? Leave some suggestions in the comments, it would be great to hear from ya!

It's my new keto diet!

It seems like I am doing this ketogenic diet without even knowing. 😊 I just follow my body's signals and these can be different along the time. I had a phase in which I didn't want to eat carbs and then a few weeks my body was asking for pasta and now back to the low carb diet. Thanks for sharing :-)

Excellent post, greetings

thank you ! Greetings to you too!
