Can Exercising Improve Cognitive Abilities?

in #gallerani6 years ago

I was reading a super interesting article recently that talked about exercising 2x+ a week and it's benefits for improving cognitive function.

This is really interesting to me because I'm fascinated both with fitness and with reading and acquiring new skills.

It turns out that exercising regularly has profound benefits within the brain. 1 Major benefit that I like is the improvement of certain motor skills.

Motor skills like learning an instrument, playing a sport, or even a video game - anything that requires some level of hand-eye coordination.

Working out regularly can help you attain these new skills and keep building upon them as well. Another great benefit of working out regularly is short-term and long-term memory "organization."

If you've ever had your house in a mess, then you know how inefficient disorganization is - when you can't find stuff in a regular place, then you're just constantly wasting countless minutes and hours looking for simple things that should take seconds to locate.

Working out is kind of like that for your brain - it can help you declutter your mind and can make it easier to recall pieces of information.

All of this is really interesting stuff and there's tons of new research coming out to support these cognitive claims as well as other benefits of working out like ATP advancements and more!!

I hope to share some of these whenever I read about them in my studies!!!

Exercise expands the making of mitochondria—the cell structures that produce and keep up our vitality—both in our muscles and in our mind, which may clarify the psychological edge we frequently encounter after a workout. The cerebrum has a noteworthy limit with respect to adjusting its structure and capacity as indicated by the impacts of the earth and experience.

Wow this is an awesome fact and I've never heard about it before. That's so cool. That's a motivation to start working out. Thanks @gallerani

Hi @gallerani Excellent your post.

In turn, animal studies have shown that exercise has a benevolent action on health and plasticity of the nervous system.

A growing body of evidence supports the influence of exercise in vitality and function of the central nervous system (CNS) and promoting resistance against neurological disorders. According to these studies, exercise has the extraordinary capacity to enhance mental health, and current efforts are being devoted to use this capacity to reduce cognitive decay in aging and psychiatric disorders.

Scientific evidence based on neuroimaging approaches over the last decade has demonstrated the efficacy of physical activity improving cognitive health across the human lifespan. Aerobic fitness spares age-related loss of brain tissue during aging, and enhances functional aspects of higher order regions involved in the control of cognition. More active or higher fit individuals are capable of allocating greater attentional resources toward the environment and are able to process information more quickly. These data are suggestive that aerobic fitness enhances cognitive strategies enabling to respond effectively to an imposed challenge with a better yield in task performance.

And, recent studies show that exercise collaborates with other aspects of lifestyle to influence the molecular substrates of cognition. In particular, select dietary factors share similar mechanisms with exercise, and in some cases they can complement the action of exercise. Therefore, exercise and dietary management appear as a noninvasive and effective strategy to counteract neurological and cognitive disorders.

I bought an exercise bike a few months ago. I do HIT exercises on it 2 or 3 times a week. This is good for my heart, but the main reason I got the bike is because regular exercise helps has beneficial effects on he mind and helps me manage my depression.

Wow that's fantastic!! I heard about some cycling bike that Tim Ferriss is promoting and I'm heavily considering it!! I'm glad to hear that you're biking and getting some beneficial results from it!! More people need to get their health in order as you have!! Kudos!
