Why do we feel that the past is better compared to our present now or even what the future might hold?
We always and never hear words about the situation deteriorating, the situation is worse than before, society is collapsing, morals are absent, and there is a large number that always believes that the past is better anyway.
This often happens when we follow the news and hear about a climate crisis or societal issues and crimes.
It also reminded me of Hans Russelling's "Knowing the Truth" book and how the majority have a somewhat blackish view of events, even though everyone thinks that health is declining and the level of education is getting worse, but the statistics have reflected all these expectations, and yet there are still those who say that society is getting worse, and the situation is deteriorating. .
This is called Decline Bias (Declinism) and is the tendency to see the past in an overly positive light and to see the present or future in a very negative light, which leads us to believe that things are worse than they were before.
One of the hugely influential means of supporting this bias is the media, so how are these stories likely to make us feel?
It's hard not to think that things are constantly getting worse when these are the images that the media gives us. When these types of news stories are combined with hearing our parents or grandparents telling stories of "good old times," we tend to overestimate the greatness of the past and overestimate the negativity of the present. This leads to regression bias, which is a negative bias that makes us think the worst is yet to come.
Even our smallest decisions are greatly influenced by our overall opinions and beliefs. This bias causes us to see only the negative from the present, while thinking about the way things were in the past with the restoration of the pink past, known as nostalgia or romance. Recalling the pink past is the tendency to view the past in a more positive light than it actually was. Whereas, if we remember these moments with neutrality, we will find among them what is worse than the evils of the present.
But succumbing to this bias may give us a pessimistic outlook and an inability to make decisions that help us prepare for the future.
Have you encountered this bias before?
In my opinion, this bias represents a real obstacle in the life of the person and society as a whole, so in your opinion, what are the effective ways to avoid it?
Your opinion on this matters to you guys
