The Rhys Darby Conspiracy: The Bridge Between Flight Of The Conchords And Voltron
Hey everybody -- @shayne here.
To begin!
My wife and I have recently finished the HBO series Flight of the Conchords, which is an hilarious musical comedy about a worthless New Zealand folk band.
Anyway, my favorite character in the show is Murray Hewitt, the completely delusional part-time manager of the titular band, who is also a Kiwi who runs the New Zealand consulate in New York.
Murray's cluelessness is so bad that that it becomes legitimate insanity, with the character mistaking the simple idiocy of his clients, Bret and Jemaine, as typical rock-star cliché behavior.
Well, my son was watching the new Netflix production of Voltron, and I noticed something... odd.
There is a character named Coran. He is the caretaker of the Princess and steward of the castle of... something.
Well, the point is that this guy is a red-haired, mustachioed, completely clueless manager of a bunch of idiots -- and has a New Zealand accent.
And that's when I began to suspect...
Here's a little bit of evidence so you can check for yourself.
Murray, Flight of the Conchords:
Coran, Voltron:
(Forgive the stupid music overlay, I couldn't find a better compilation)
When I was a kid...
I really liked the original Voltron series.
The original Coran character was not like this. It appears to me that this updated Coran was in fact modeled after Murray from Flight of the Conchords.
Then my wife went to IMDB to check if there was any connection, because the similarity between them was so similar that it felt like they just pulled the character of Murray from current-day earth and put him into Voltron as a pointy eared alien.
And that's where the bomb dropped.
Both Characters are the product of Comedian Rhys Darby!
That's right!
Rhys is actually both characters.
....
I know, it's not that big of a conspiracy, but it was fun to investigate and discover.
And as I've now discovered on YouTube, I'm not the first one to have made the connection.
And, aaah.... that's about it.
I love MURRAY! He's hilarious!
Flight of the Conchords is truly hilarious! I love that show. Especially the cup episode, where there electricity is shut off and they have to sell their guitars and Murray helps out a Nigerian he got an email from. Just love it!
I would consider myself a fan of Rhys Darby and this is a cool discovery. Thanks for sharing.
