Account update!
Due to the recent events, which you can read about in This Post, I will have to change a few things. I have gone through the options and decided on what to do going forward.
I have now been through many different methods and ideas to try get the data off the hard drive, without damaging it even more. I have been using a lot of my time on trying to get this thing fixed.
Don't worry that's not me in the picture, or this problem would be even worse :D
Moving forward I will be posting on my account until such a time the worst case comes along, that being I have lost this account and nothing can be done to get it back.
Until that happens each post will be full steem power posts. This is because I don't have any of my other keys except the posting one. I will also keep voting on everyone as usual. If worst comes to worst this account will become a voting account only and anything that can be transferred into steem power will be done so.
Data must be stored at second place in avoid loss of data.
True, I always keep copies of my password in various files, emails and other places. It effects data integrity but atleast I have sources to recover it.
Backing up is important but so is security. Don't make multiple copies of passwords and keep online etc. A password manager, encrypted and backed up to USBs which are kept in a secure place is a good solution.
Another good solution is writing it on a piece of paper and keeping it with other important paperwork in the fire proof filing cabinet. Or do people not have these anymore?
What is paper? I agree that would work but I have literally hundreds of passwords and keys etc for websites. I find the password manager I use to be invaluable. It creates a difficult password, stores it and you can access it and cut and paste it easily. It's also encrypted and easy to back up. I'm not selling it, but there are numerous versions availiable, many free.
I wouldn't say this to be a very secure method. I agree with @grizgal, use a password manager. i have a free app on my iPhone an app call called ipassword. It requires you to use your fingerprint to login. As a back up, I have taken a screen shot and saved that into a secure folder that only I have access too. I would be very surprised if anyone knew what it was related to if they did stumble across it...unless they work for MI5 or Mossad, then i'm screwed!
We know everything..............bwahahahahhaah
Thanks for the advice, I have made a few copies on USB, External hard drive and also e-mailed it to my work e-mail, to have it on a different server as well. I also took a photo on my phone and have a hard copy in a drawer, what do you do I have enough copies?
Always a good idea, one on site, one off site and one only you know where to find.
Doing accounting that was the golden rule (always in 3's) Daily, Weekly and Monthly. "In the old days" (showing my age) one backup of the accounting went to the bank into a special deposit box. One was courier serviced to a branch or head office and one was in a fire proof safe, that was the weekly and month end backups. Daily went home with 3 different members of staff.
Now if we do that for a company's accounting why are we lax at looking after our own assets. Excellent food for thought @dragonslayer109
Good informative thank you for sharing
I wrote mine down, pain in the tush but hey the first thing I was told here was have multiple locations for the password and never lose it...
Am really sorry about that. Thanks for the advice.
So sorry about your laptop.. I hope you get your passwords back.
total bummer sorry about that man
OUCH! I hope all works out... Can you plug the ssd into another HD as a slave via USB? I know that sounds like the most obvious answer, but yeah.. have you tried it? :)
