New Year's Resolution

The New Year’s Resolution seems to be an important tradition of that very special moment when you make the first step into a New Year, but what is actually a New Year’s Resolution.
It’s a promise that a person makes for the new year, like a promise you will do for the next year. Basically the New Year’s Resolution goal is to change something from your life to improve it, something like to become a better person and to live a better life.

The history of this tradition.

This tradition started in 153 B.C when January was named after Janus, a mythic god of Rome.

Janus had two faces:
-One turning toward the past (backward)
-One turning toward the future (forward)

On December 31, the Romans imagined that Janus would look into the past and the new year at the same time. Then is became a symbol to make resolutions for the new year and forgive enemies from the past year.

Also the Romans believed that by giving gifts and make promises, Janus would see it and bless them for the year ahead.

Why is New Year’s Resolution so easy to break?

Study shows that 77% of the people who make a New Year’s Resolution end up breaking it even before actually starting to do it.

First: we tend to overdo it, over promising with ourself. It’s quite complicated to maintain one Resolution so imagine 5-6-7-8… Motivation is like everything else from life, it goes up and down quite fast, so when you are over-motivated you tend to make lots of promises, you will be willing to change half of your bad habits etc, but the truth is, the motivation will go down quickly and you won’t have the time to change even one of your bad habits. So try to focus on one single Resolution.

Second: New Year’s Resolution shouldn’t be something that you decide after 3 flutes of champagne, 2 Vokda, 1 whisky-coke. You should be committed, thoughtful and definitely not hasty. Take the time to write down your thoughts, what you actually really want to change, and what you can change.
