Do not forget that this day is about love, all and any love. No matter who you love, do not forget to show it and never take that person for granted. If he or she is special to you, show it. Use your words and actions and do not be afraid to express your emotions.

If all you know about this day is how people are buying chocolate and flowers, we have some educational info for you. Who knows when you will need it and it is always fun to learn new trivia. You may even show your knowledge to your special someone and impress them with how much you know about this lovely day.

Christian and ancient Roman tradition
mixed together...

There are many stories behind this day and it is hard to distinguish fact from fiction and say how and exactly when it all started. The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, and all of them were martyred for what they did. In one version, Roman Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives so he outlawed marriage for young men but Valentine married them in secret. When the Romans found out, they killed him. Another story tells us how Valentine helped Christians escape harsh Roman prisons. There is even one story where Valentine wrote the first Valentine letter to a woman he loved and signed it “From your Valentine.” These stories are the Catholic side, there is also another side to this, the pagan one.

When Christianity was spreading, the means and ways of that spreading were quite interesting. Since people were Pagan and not willing to renounce their Gods and way of life, Christian holidays were put on the same dates or near the Pagan ones so people could adjust to them. Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Lupercalia (celebrated on February 15th) was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. Lupercalia was officially outlawed and deemed “un-Christian” at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. Keep in mind that it was not about love back then, far from it. It had nothing to do with love because Lupercalia did and Christians did not want any associating with it. It was years later that Valentine has begun to be associated with love.

This day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century but it gained popularity in the 18th-century England when sending greeting cards started, the mass production of them begun in the 19th century. Today we have symbols like heart-shaped outlines, doves, the figure of the winged Cupid and of course, red roses and chocolates. It is pretty much commercialized and there is great profit in it. People around the world give each other presents and celebrate their love. We see nothing wrong in that. Some say that love should be celebrated every day and we agree but with all the other things we have special dates for, why not a special day only for love? It is saying that love is so important that it needs a day of celebrating it.

This day is about love, any love and not only romantic one. Love is a feeling that is pushing this world into a better future and if you look at human emotions, you can divide them into two categories, positive and negative ones. On one side you have love as the biggest positive feeling and on another, fear as the biggest negative one. All good comes from love and all bad comes from fear. Come stay on the right side and do everything with love. Live with love and create with love. One of the best ways you can do that is by visiting Fundition and opening your hearts to show support for some projects that need your help. Let that be your special mission for today. Spread your love on Fundition. Enjoy your day!
