Today, 19 August 2018, is World Humanitarian Day and I am sharing 25% of the Author Rewards from this post with Humanitarian Causes across the world.
My article today is three-fold:
World Humanitarian Day
Fundition an Introduction
How to Join Steemit
World Humanitarian Day
World Humanitarian Day has been set as the 19th of August each year since 2008. The idea is to unify global support to advocate for the continued improvement in safety and security of humanitarian aid workers, and also for the protection, well-being and dignity of people affected by crisis.
The 19th August 2008 was specifically chosen by the United Nations as the first World Humanitarian Day (WHD) as it marked 5 years since a terrorist attack which killed 22 people at the UN building in Baghdad, Iraq.
This World Humanitarian Day we continue to bring attention to the millions of civilians affected by armed conflict every day. People in cities and towns struggle to find food, water, and safe shelter, while fighting drives millions from their homes. Children are recruited and used to fight, and their schools are destroyed. Women are abused and humiliated. As humanitarian workers deliver aid, and medical workers treat the wounded and sick, they are directly targeted, treated as threats, and prevented from bringing relief and care to those in desperate need.”
Quote: United Nations Website.
The humanitarian concerns described by the United Nations on their website only really scratch the surface: many millions of lives are affected by conflict around the world, whether that be migrants displaced from their home; children, elderly, vulnerable and disabled people impacted by global conflicts; or aid workers and journalists affected by supporting or reporting on global conflict.
The UN’s main campaign for WHD (World Humanitarian Day) is here: https://www.worldhumanitarianday.org/en and this is very much the UN calling on global leaders to do everything in their power to protect people caught up in conflict. There is a call for donations to the cause on their website.
Many of the lives of people in the “Global South” have been negatively impacted as a result of the decisions/actions of Western Economic Powers over the last 200 years. And the fact that the UN have called for a single day to be called WHD, doesn’t stop us all being more humanitarian day by day. We can act ourselves to be more humanitarian, even without a centralized authority, and we can do so with the help of Blockchain Technology. See Fundition below.
Fundition
Fundition is the one and only next generation blockchain crowdfunding platform which provides an opportunity for project founders to fund their project with nothing lost to transaction fees and middlemen. It is also the case that supporters and backers can contribute with zero fees and actually receive a small reciprocal benefit.
I’ve had the pleasure of conversing with CTO and Founder of Fundition whilst writing this article:
This first four months of Fundition have been both challenging and rewarding but everything has gone very well. We have respected deadlines, delivered the roadmap, made improvements to the platform and website, and I must say that I am overwhelmingly pleased with the collaborations we have made with the Steem community members and also what can I say for the team of Fundition, well, they have been great and they all have a very big heart" Aytaç Cetinkaya - 19 August 2018
If you are familiar with some of the other crowdsourcing applications on the internet, such as Kickstarter, Patreon, Indiegogo, or GoFundMe, – there are some similarities, such as contributors can both donate and upvote (just like Kickstarter) and also the project founders can create project updates (like Patreon). However, Fundition, has much more on offer and a key differentiator is that Fundition is a benefit-based corporation, and does not take profit from transactions.
Fundition is built on the Steem blockchain and their mission is “to disrupt traditional crowdfunding models for the benefit of all stakeholders, leading to a larger number of inventive projects that will impact the world in meaningful ways” (Source).
The method of funding is through the simple exchange of cryptocurrency tokens, without any fees. In the end the project funder can choose to follow instructions for converting their project fund into local currency, or they can choose to earn more tokens and capitalise upon the technology in the Steem Blockchain. The Steem Blockchain is a rewards platform, upon which users can monetize their content, and grow their community.
For Steem Account Holders the most basic benefits of Fundion are:
- No middlemen;
- No minimum targets for Founders
- Founders receive contributions with no transaction fees;
- Founders receive ongoing rewards (in Hearts and HeartPower) for content, project updates, and final project delivery;
- Supporters receive small rewards in return for any contribution;

Here is just one example of a Humanitarian project in detail from @wafrica:
PROVIDING AID TO INTERNALLY DISPLACED PEOPLE IN NIGERIA
The project created by @wafrica has been embraced by many people in the Steemit community. This particular project is helping the people of Northern Nigeria who have been displaced as a result of the spread of terrorism, many people have fled their homes and this project aims to support them with floor mats, mosquito nets and insect repellent to add to the resources already supplied by @wafrica (cash, food and water).
Quoting from the project in the words of @wafrica “On our last visit, the displaced victims pleaded that we buy mats for them. We asked why mats and not mattresses, they replied that the room where they live has a leaking roof. Mats can be easily sun dried if it gets soaked. They also complained about mosquitoes in the neighborhood therefore resulting to malaria.”
The following is a screenshot of the project:
SO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO DIFFERENTLY TODAY?
As you can see from the screenshots above this project is currently less than 30% funded.
If you are on Steemit – you can act and contribute today – it will probably take you less than five clicks!!
If you are not on Steemit yet – I look forward to seeing you in the near future! Find out how to join below:
