Fruits And Veggies Monday - Spicy Indonesian Tofu Dish
Hi everyone!! again...it’s Monday and time to entry to a weekly contest #fruitsandveggiesmonday initiated by @lenasveganliving and hosted by @plantstoplanks
Have you heard about “Tahu Gejrot”?? This is one of the foods Indonesian can’t live without, I believe. Am I being too much by saying that?
well, other than tempeh, tahu or tofu is a very typical Indonesian food where you can easily find everywhere in Indonesia, especially Java Island I guess.
And today I’m bringing simple recipe “Spicy Indonesian Tofu Dish” or we called it Tahu Gejrot in Indonesia, so this tofu dish is come from Cirebon, West Java Indonesia. is basically tofu fritters served with Indonesian spicy tamarind sauce.
Spicy Indonesian Tofu Dish
INGREDIENTS
Tofu Puffs
For the sauce:
- 3 fresh tamarind
- 3 red Thai chillies
- 1 clove garlic
- 1 shallot
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 25 g palm sugar
- 50 ml sweet soya sauce
- 200 ml water
You can actually change the fresh tamarind with any kind of tamarind, it doesn’t have to the fresh one, or you can even change it with vinegar if you don’t have tamarind.
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Fry the tofu
for 1 portion, take about 6-8 tofu puffs and deep fry them.
Step 2: Making the sauce
- Boil the tamarind and palm sugar in 200 ml water, about 10-15 minutes or until the flavours of the tamarind comes out and the palm sugar is melted.
- While tamarind and palm sugar is being boil, make the spicy paste, grind the chillies, garlic and shallots.
- And then, place the spicy paste in a bowl, place the strainer on it and pour the hot tamarind sauce into it. Stir to mix it well.
Step 3: Preparing the Dish
Cut each of fried tofu into four pieces, place cut tofu in a shallow bowl, and pour the sauce on top of the tofu and serve immediately.
Thanks for stopping by,
Till next time ❤️
This is one of my favorite Indonesian dishes that I haven't eaten in a while! Right time to ask my in-laws to prepare it again, lol. I do suck at Indonesian dishes so I only eat them there BUT it's always a feast :)
Thank you for sharing your delicious recipe! Have a lovely weekend!
my pleasure @delishtreats
I also can’t get over from most Indonesian dish, and isn’t that easy to find Asian ingredients here. like those tofu puffs, I normally have to drive 3 hours to get them, so is like 6 hours two ways just to get tofu. Lol
Hahaha, but then when you drive there you should go with a truck and fill it with all those delicious tofu puffs so that you don't have to go there again.. like ever again :D
I love Asian vegan food - it is always so tasty indeed yummy
thanks so much @michelnilles 😁😁
Looks like a tasty tofu dish.
hmm...yes, pretty tasty to me, haha thanks tho! @alokkumar121
I bet my boyfriend would like this! He likes things a little bit spicy, so I may have to try this soon. I've never worked with tamarind before, but I have seen it at the store so I know I can get some here to play with some time. :) Thanks for sharing with us again this week!
thanks dear! @plantstoplanks it’s pretty easy to make, I bet your bf would like it 😁

Couldn't agree more with you.. tempe and tahu always together in many indonesian cuisines @gotlius 😉 .. are you living in indonesia, Lily?
The most famous tahu dish is Tahu Isi.. or tofu fritters, tahu gejrot only available in Java but Tahu isi, you can find it anywhere in Indonesia where the javaneses exist😉
I know right...tahu and tempeh ada dimana2 di Indonesia.
and no kak @cicisaja, I’m not living in Indonesia, but Canada 😁
Cool... no wonder you knew how an indonesian enjoy their Tahu😂
