Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean with a coastline of 1152 kilometres and an area of more than 25 km². It is, together with some smaller islands, part of the autonomous region Sicily of the Italian Republic.
The island lies in front of the "tip of the boot" of Italy and represents the remains of a land bridge that once connected Europe and Africa. The most famous geographical feature of the island is the Etna volcano. The largest cities are Catania, Messina, Syracuse and the capital of the region - Palermo.
There are numerous reservoirs, but only one natural lake. The almost circular "Lago di Perusa" lies in the centre of the island and is of volcanic origin.

Es gibt zahlreiche Stauseen, jedoch nur einen natürlichen. Der fast kreisrunde „Lago di Perusa“ liegt im Zentrum der Insel und ist vulkanischen Ursprungs.
