Not for sale or Not.

in #freewrites5 years ago (edited)

Nulu was a town on the outskirt of the state. They had a population of 700 persons. They had small cute bungalows which were all built in the same way. But, one thing was known with the Nulu people. They had horses. Almost all the houses had a ranch. The expanse of land that belonged to each houses were so wide you couldn't see it end from afar.

The most important thing to these townies was their local derby. It was their annual horse competition. To them it was just a competition by name because on this day both losers and winners are seen celebrating round the streets.

The local derby competition beats Christmas celebration in Nulu. It was their pride. Foreigners visit to partake in the celebration (Or it was their love for gambling). So on this day, the town is full and crowded.

The town chief, a fifty year old man of average height, studly and hardworking moves to the rythym of song being played with a cup of beer in his hands. Smilling and greeting, the foreigners all try to make an acquittance of him every year, so he was use to this ritual until he sighted someone in the crowd. Someone he had told not to come back to his town. He got furious!

(#5minutes stop)

He tapped the unwanted foreigner by the shoulder, he looked back and smiled at him. The chief wasn't smiling..

"Hi chief, looks like someone pissed you off"

"Why are you here?" The chief asked.

"Ooh, Come on chief, you didn't think I wasn't going to come back after our meeting last year." The foreigner replied.

" And besides, I'm a business man, I don't give up easily" He added.

"The lands are not for sale. The people would die before they sell their ranches to you. We don't want your big companies here,So go back to whatever hole you crawled out from." The chief said confidently.

The business man took a sip of his beer and smacked his lip.

"Speak for yourself and not your people. You want to keep a tradition while I am here with money" He giggled.

"Incase you don't know chief, People would sell their happiness. That's the power of money. And that's why I will have power over you in your own town" He added.

The chief watched as he sauntered on into crowd and he felt a pang of fear run through him.

He looked at the smile on people, the children and bond between the foreigners and his people, the beauty and romance and he could see it all vaporized into thin air.

I had to look this one up and it turns out it could mean different things but I couldn't keep my mind off the horse race and here's the result.

Well, dang! I wanted to see the chief prevail!
"Incase you don't know chief, People would sell their happiness. That's the power of money. And that's why I will have power over you in your own town" -- and the vaporizing into thin air that follows - {{nooo!!}} - never mind Carol's ambition to "torture the protagonist," which is the name of the game for authors. Noooooo!!!!!

Lol...
Sorry, I guess I am writer with sad endings.

Thanks for reading.

Sad endings are by far the most memorable.
Well, except for Cinderella and other fairy-tale Happily Ever Afters....
Our brains are wired for negative and dangerous stuff; it's an evolutionary adaptation to keep us alive longer. It's safe to forget happy things and dangerous to forget negative things.
Still, I want magic and divine intervention (Just not puppies and rainbows and unicorns) :)

Wow
You just gave it the most thoughtful explanation of why we behave that way and the truth.

Haan no to puppies too... They keep dropping their shits everywhere😷

By the way, your hashtag #freewrites has you and only you showing up; whereas #freewrite (no -s) puts you in the company of hundreds of Steemians, which means more visibility for your posts. Amazing what a difference one little -s can make!

And little 's' just decided to shit on me - Amazing!😢
Lol, Thanks for bringing that to my attention @carolkean
