The woman in the painting was very ornate with a floral dress and birds in her hair. Katie wondered if she had been a former worker in the home since she didn’t look like anyone else in the family. The dress was silk, Katie was sure of it. She’d never owned a silk dress in her life. In fact, she barely ever changed out of her jeans.

But the photo made her want to dress more ornate. If she did her hair occasionally she wouldn’t look that bad. Katie would never have shiny, raven black hair like the woman in the painting, but her hair could be placed in fancy braids if she spent the time.

The problem was she didn’t ever have any time. She woke in just enough time to get ready for school, and then after school she worked at the library. Neither of these activities required or even allowed her to dress fancy like that woman was.

If she wanted to dress like that, Katie would need to change her whole life. She’d have to get up earlier, do her hair more often, and then learn to take care of fancy clothing.

The clock chimed nine, and Katie realized she was late for class. She would have to think about being more ornate another day, when she had time.
