In the Texas Panhandle

in #freewrite6 years ago (edited)

Texas Panhandle table lands, as flat as johnnycake
Staked plains to guide the conquistadors
A wisecracker took a stake
Leading a horseback traveler to pass the waters
A playa saucer filled with sweet liquid
To refresh horse and rider

Seeking gold, yet blinded
The traveler rattles on in thirst; a mere babbler
Of stories too grand to tell
Voice crusted with dusty soil

Lost companion of sweet lavender
Never again to remove her garter
She withered without his touch, his aura, his tenor
He wandered aimlessly ever near
In the Texas Panhandle.

It's easy to go mad in the wilderness, guided only by fanciful ambitions, and questionable hope...

I loved these lines:

The traveler rattles on in thirst; a mere babbler
Of stories too grand to tell
Voice crusted with dusty soil

Somehow this piece feels both historical, yet also very contemporary. I guess that's why they call it timeless! Enjoyed it a lot - looking forward to more :)

I agree with @lazarus-wist, those are some very well written lines. I also liked:

Seeking gold, yet blinded

You have a real way with words - I imagine it's not very easy to freewrite poetry :D Good job! Do keep it up :)

I agree with you. Best of luck. Awesome post. Thanks. @mediaservice

Very good imagery! This poem was such a pleasure to read, and reread. I was taken by this line:

She withered without his touch, his aura, his tenor
