Crepe Myrtle Caper

Mertz was on her four hour drive home after visiting her friend who lived in a different state when she saw the perfect Crepe Myrtle Bush, and just had to have it. She dug up some roots and while putting them in the trunk of her car, a state trooper pulled up behind her. The police office told Mertz that the bush she had just vandalized and stealing parts of, was a legally protected species and she would now be charged with a crime.
She tried her best to get out of the charge and rambled on and on to the officer with a round-about story that just didn't make any sense at all. Finally, the officer had enough and gave Mertz another charge...beating around the bush.
