Freewrite + Photography - Prompt: Orange Blossoms

She lived, she laughed, she loved.

She dreamed.

The air was cool, the sun was setting.

Though there were people around, they were few, a pair of lovers strolling hand in hand, some kids chasing each other home, a young girl leisurely pedalling her bike. They all had places to go, they were moving along, slow but still moving.

She alone sat still, her only companion her thoughts, face turned away from passersby and facing the direction of the fading light.

Minutes trickled by. Still, she sat on the grassy field, unknown plants swaying about in the near evening breeze.

A dragonfly flew past her head and landed on the tip of her onse, jolting her out of her reverie. A smile bloomed in her formerly solemn face, a giggle finding its way out of her mouth.

Gently, she gave the tiny insect a push and watched as it circled her twice before flying off into the unknown. Her still frame relaxed as she propped up an arm with her knee, a palm supporting her chin as she gazed at the direction where the dragonfly disappeared.

A thoughtful look appeared in her eyes as she sighed.

How she wished to be just like the dragonfly, chasing the horizons, going where she wanted to.

It was a dream of hers, to follow in the foosteps of her deceased aunt and be a doctor, a doctor who didn't work in the hospital but worked for poor and neglected. In her mind she could see the image of her aunt, wearing a white jacket as she checked the patients that came into the little community clinic where she worked, a reassuring smile on her face as she served each one.

For her, her aunt was a hero, one that that she hoped to be like.

But her parents opposed her dream. To them, her aunt was a person wasted her talents and lacked ambition. They wanted her, their daughter, to be a well-respected and wealthy physician who worked in a prestigious hospital.

It saddened her, but she quietly bowed to their demands as she continued with her studies. She knew they meant well, as their only child they wanted her to have a good life and to them it meant a stable and respected job where she could earn comfortably. She loved them and they loved her, but their opinions were in opposition with each other.

Whenever she thought about it, it gave her a painful feeling. It was heartache.

She had to choose between her dreams or her parents, and the time was nearing for her to pick between the two.

Each month, each week, each day that passed, that drew to that time of reckoning, the storm in her heart became fiercer and her mood more grave.

Her original cheery personality became solemn, to the point that her friends worried over her and she had to put up a facade of her former cheer. She began to take time away from everything, from friends, studies, her family, and spent it quietly by herself, thinking and thinking.

At first, the silence was suffocating but later became comforting as it gave her much needed space.

The place that she was currently at was a favorite of hers, the scent of orange blossoms was soothing and there were few people to disturb her peace.

As the sun finally disappeared behind a nearby hill, she lay fully on the grass and stared at the night sky where the stars made their presence known.

Soon, soon, it would be time.

Parents, dreams, where would it all go?

But for now, she would put them aside and enjoy this tiny span of time, watching twinkling lights and smelling orange blossoms.
