Day 4 of Free Write: Callous Prompt
Callous is a really strong word to use. Honestly I knew the definition of it but I can't remember the last time that I have actually seen or heard the word used by someone naturally in a sentence. I think this is rightfully so as it is a word that has a lot of meaning. Upon looking up the actual definition Google one of the things that stood out to me is the writing of "CRUEL disregard for others". I have met a lot of people in my life that have shown clear signs of disregarding what others think about them, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that their disregard has been cruel in my eyes.
On the topic of thinking of people that show disregard it got me thinking about the communities in which I have lived in. As much as I love Chicago, it is pretty evident that a lot of people here tend to feel entitled and only think about themselves when around strangers. Now that is not to say that is how everyone is here by ANY means, but it is something I observed. It is especially interesting because I only really observed this disregard for others around the city that I live once I lived in central Illinois for a few years. People in central Illinois were overly courteous of people they did not know in environments like restaurants and grocery stores. I worked a retail job in the city and one in central Illinois and it was a night and day difference for sure.
The nice thing is that I can't say I've met someone on Steemit that exhibits the traits that are mentioned in the definition of the word callous! It seems like the less people that you run into in your life that you can even call "callous", then the happier you will be!
Time is up for today already! Follow the link I have placed below if you are interested in learning about how you can partake in the free write challenge yourself!

I loved your last paragraph...so true! Tip!
Thank you so much for the tip!
My pleasure! : )
My husband and I lived on Southwater Street next to the waterfront in Chicago. We would walk to work up Wacker St most of the year. The people walking the sidewalks in downtown Chicago have a callous disregard for other people sharing sidewalks with them. My husband and I would take our little grocery cart out to go shopping and play chicken with people to see who would give way first. Without the cart some people would elbow me out of the way when they were walking two abreast.
Your grocery cart story made me laugh, as sad as it is that people are that ridiculous in the city. I still love Chicago with all my heart though :). I haven't been to NYC but I heard it is WAY worse there, so at least we have that going for us!
Also, thank you for resteeming my post! You have no idea how much I appreciate it!
I admire good writing it’s my weak spot😆❤️
Callous people give me the creeps and I try to avoid them if I know that it is a permanent condition for them, but when in a situation where you can't avoid them, then I try to kill them with kindness no matter how big their snarl or how rude their remarks lol. The funny thing is that often a seemingly uncaring person can change into someone very pleasant in an instant! I learned after a while that some of them had trained themselves to do so out of strictly selfish motives, it just made life easier. But others were genuinely nice people at heart and were just having a bad day or were very sad over a recent trauma.
Killing them with kindness is a MUST. After working retail so many years that is the only defense you can have against that kind of person.
Great writing and amazing thank you for participating. @snrm
