5 Minute Freewrite - Prompt: Nose ring
Damaris admired her reflection in the mirror. She had a new piercing today, a nose ring this time, and she had worked hard to earn it. That piercing represented nearly three years of hard, sometimes deadly work for the Association of Mages. If not for the generous boost of power the piercing brought her, she might have given up trying for it after that first job she took on.
She sighed and tried not to think about the work that would be needed before she could claim another piercing, another magical bonus that would help propel her toward financial stability. As much as she loved her work, she also hated having to take on jobs from the Association to offset her relatively small client list.
Damaris suddenly heard a door slam, followed by rapid footsteps and her roommate's angelic voice. Cora was cursing worse than any biker Damaris had met during her time bartending on the bad side of town.
"Overslept again?" Damaris called.
Cora rushed into the bathroom and began combing her fingers through her sea-green hair, crowding Damaris away from the mirror. The dye job was obviously new, but at least it looked like she had gone to a professional this time.
"I'm so late, ugh," she muttered. Then, at catching Damaris' reflection in the mirror, "Seriously, you had them give you a nose ring? Why not your ear? No wonder you have trouble getting clients!"
Damaris opened her mouth to argue, ready to cite Cora's colorful hair as equally unusual, but Cora rushed out of the bathroom before she could utter a sound.
Note: This one ran over the 5 minute mark, but not by much. :-) There was so much more I wanted to add into the story!

Awesome! I love how you portray the necessity of the piercings and their function in magic, but that these are all tools for her financial stability. Toss in an "Association" that she'd rather not work for and even the introduction of the room mate... this is easily a setup for a much bigger story.
I admit, this is one of the freewrites that has made it on to my Maybe-Someday story list. Maybe, someday, I might flesh it out and make it into a full story!
