Middle class I am

in #freewrite7 years ago

I am from a middle class family and there is no way I can change it whatsoever. Even if I win a lottery worth a billion, I guess I will always remain middle class in my mind. However here are few things that every middle class family in India finds very obvious.

✓Opening a gift wrap neatly: we middle class people back here in India open our gift wrapped boxes carefully. Which would make most think that we are civilized, but no, we do it so that we can use it to wrap some giveaways the next time. We obviously don't want to waste money.

✓the fancy dinnerware: every middle class house in India has this pricey dinnerware that they keep as show peices. Our mum's make sure that no kid wanders anywhere close to it. The dinnerware is exclusively for special rich guests. Not everyone can eat in those, you have to be filthy rich and why the hell would rich people have dinner with middle class people is something that mum cannot answer.

✓sorry younger sibling: if you have a elder sibling of the same gender as you, then I am so sorry for you. There cannot be anything bad than this. In a middle class household the privilege to have new things is held only by the first child of the family. The second one always gets passovers. And if you are the third child then I believe you don't even know what new means.

✓reuse: we middle class people can reuse and recycle almost anything. Be it plastic bottles or old tattered clothes. Coca cola bottles double up as water bottles and any cotton clothes converts automatically into mopping cloth or kitchen napkins. No middle class Indian would be shocked if he finds his boxers in the kitchen😂.

✓showoff: believe it or not, we like showing off. If you are an middle class India you would agree that we love showing off. Mother's here go crazy when their child achieves something silly at school. Father's take pride in announcing their son's salary. Similarly, we don't remove the airline baggage tags off our bags. They stay there for years until our next air travel or till it falls off on it's own, whichever is the earliest.

✓our toothpaste tube: we don't have toothpaste dispensers like those in Western countries. We squeeze every drop of toothpaste available in the tube using all our strength. The force that we put in to remove the last drop of toothpaste can be compared to the force the mother's use during labour. Yes, our doctors can actually give pregnant ladies a almost finished tooth paste tube and tell them to get the last drop out and that will surely reduce the screams in the labour room. However, squeezing is not the end of it. We then snail it up and if that doesn't work, we slit open the tube and make sure that there is no trace of paste inside before the remainings go into the trash.

There are many more things we do, the list is unending. We actually follow everything that is mentioned above and this is not a imaginary post.

Good to know the thrift of the working class, middle class family is seen in India as well as rural America. It is a valuable set of skills passed from parent to child in each generation, and is largely forgotten by our new "consumer class".
