I have a brother. No sister. Our childhood home was bereft of the laughter of a girl. My father often lamented not having a daughter. My mother often felt outnumbered. But I had a cousin. My mother's sister's daughter. She was the closest thing I had to a sister and is about 10 years older than me.
I adore her and when she got married and had children they were very important to me. They lived in a different province and I did not see them often. There is one occasion I do remember clearly. Her three children were still very young, around middle school somewhere and I had the opportunity to treat them. We went to a movie and lunch afterwards.
Lunch was at a place with golden arches that you should know well wherever you are from. The kids loved it and I was a favourite relative for a long time after that. It was their first time at this place. I felt great. It was awesome to treat them and their response was extremely gratifying. I treasured the memory.
Then one day I read an article about how unhealthy the food at this international fast-food chain is. Another article showed how a burger from this place was left in a car for three months and still looked precisely the way it did when it was initially served. I'm no nutritionist but that can't be good!
My treat was poison! What if those kids fell in love with those burgers and kept on eating them. It would be like murdering them. Slowly, but still, their deaths would be my fault.
They are all adults now and very health conscious. I am relieved but when I saw this prompt I immediately thought of the day I served people I loved Poison. The fact that I did it with love did not make it healthier in the least. One dose did not kill them but it would have if they had continued.
Don't kill yourself or those you love by what you put on your table!
