The Looking Glass

“The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes—and ships—and sealing-wax—
Of cabbages—and kings—
And why the sea is boiling hot—
And whether pigs have wings."

—Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll

The Looking Glass

There has been a lot of debate about what or who Lewis Carroll was referring to when he wrote “The Walrus and the Carpenter.”
Although he wrote this way before crypto currency was a thing, I think the Walrus could represent Steemit and we the Steemians are the carpenter, helping to build the blockchain.

Steemit like the Walrus has encouraged us to open up and talk about things we might never have mentioned. We talk about our daily life with it’s hardships and blessings, our health, family, work, animals and just about anything under the sun.

I, like many others, don’t like talking about my earlier life. I think it’s a carryover from childhood, when I was warned not to talk about anything that went on in the home. Basically, keep a stiff upper lip and carry on, no matter how you felt. It was the days when children were to be seen and not heard. The discipline received would be called physical abuse nowadays.

Like the Walrus said,

“The time has come to talk of many things.”

My Five Minute Freewrite on the prompt Walrus.

Excellent post Jo!! Very true as well! I know my parents (dad more so) grew up in a harsh time (during depression) and wished they had talked more about their childhood but I also understand why they did not.

Thanks Dee. It was a different time. It’s almost like they tried to break your spirit to keep you humble.

You are welcome Jo!! It sure seemed that way! ❤️

Thanks for using eSteem!

A good way to use 'walrus'! And you are right, I do feel safe talking about personal thoughts and feelings here on Steem.

Thanks Melinda @melinda010100. That part of the poem is my favorite.
It’s true Melinda, something about Steemit and the wonderful people on here, like yourself, make it easy to open up about personal life. We are not that different, each having our own share of trials and tribulations and genuinely happy when good fortune happens to one of us. 💕

It is all about the people and the friendships we have made, isn't it?

For sure, Melinda. 😊

Another fine #freewrite, you're getting better at these @redheadpei. 😁

Thanks so much Uncle Bruni @wonderwop! 💕

I too, I received some discipline when I was very young which would be thought of as abuse. The world is changing day by day. No spanking of kids anymore. 😁. In the next few years robot will be correcting children through cartoons not parents.

Well, am here to deliver the weekend freewrite prompt.

Do have a wonderful weekend and a blessed sunday.

Thanks @botefarm for delivering the prompt. Yes, how we were disciplined severely as children/teens can leave emotional scars. I know it has with me.

Haha! howdy redheadpei! I can relate. My dad used to tell us when we were little kids and someone came over to talk business he would say "make yourselves scarce!" lol.

Mornin’ Cowboy! Those were the days when children were to be seen and not heard. Spare the rod and spoil the children was also part of their philosophy.
I do realize they wanted the best for us but It was a strange way to go about showing it.
