Snakes Alive!
Billy guided the lathered up horse through the narrow path leading into the canyon. He drove him mercifully all night and now, at daybreak, they were in the belly of the canyon. Billy wasn’t thinking of his tired horse or the intense heat but of the shiny gold waiting for him.
He had hoped to meet up with the ‘Hole In The Wall’ cowboys. They had a shitload of gold and promised to give him his share from the Wells Fargo Stagecoach in Arizona.
”Sometimes a robber needs more than a handshake to seal a deal with another robber.”
Those were the thoughts going through Billy’s head as he headed for the small watering hole to let his horse have a much needed drink of cold canyon water. Billy filled his canteen and looked back to see a rattlesnake coiled beside his horse and ready to strike.
“Bang, bang, bang.” The repeated sound filled the air and nearly deafened Billy. With the quick reaction from years of gunfighting, he drew his six-shooter, cocked the lever and looked to see his old pal, Stretch, with the gun still smoking in his hand. No mistaking that long, lean figure with the wide toothy grin.
”One second more and that rattler would have got ya, partner.”
Thank you weren’t words in Billy’s vocabulary. He looked at Stretch with a satisfied sneer. He wanted to see the gold, take his share and leave this snake ridden canyon in the dust.
”Rest of the gang’s not here yet, Billy.”

Reminds me of the Mixican cowboy's movies I used to watch.
I think Billy is a good shooter. I wonder how he would have felt if he had hit it on his old pal.

Thanks @maxwellmarcusart. I tried to make it realistic. Yes, Billy is a good shooter and I will probably continue on with the story in another freewrite.

With your title "Snakes Alive" I almost didn't read it. Snakes...ew!!! Good thing Stretch was there for Billy and me. LOL!
I understand perfectly, Kitten. I have a terrible phobia where snakes are concerned. I felt I should of had a cowboy shooting a snake in the top photo but looking at them even in photos creeps me out.
Aw, I like that name "Kitten!" Thanks Jo! I am glad to hear that I am not the only one that has a phobia of snakes and just like you, I can't even look at them in photos. Same with spiders. I even took photos of them but man, oh man, I had nightmares for weeks.
