An Apple A Day

Every month or so I read about another super food that I should be eating to get more energy, live longer or to lift depression.

When I grew up it was a struggle to have a balanced meal, much less include a super food. I don’t think a balanced meal was heard of then.. Meals were simple and salt and pepper were the extent of spices. I never saw garlic, curry, hot peppers or mangoes used. Homemade bread, meat, onions and potatoes were the mainstay for most people in the area. Usually that meat was from their own animals and the veggies from the garden they planted. Summers were good for food with the garden but the winters could be long and lean.

One thing we always had were apples. There was an wonderful orchard on the farm and apples would be stored in the cellar and usually stayed good until Christmas.

I believe one should eat food grown in the region you live in and the higher the fruit grows from the ground, the better it is for your health. Apples certainly meets that category.

Chewing food well and eating in a calm relaxed atmosphere will also help. Bringing arguments to the table will not help your digestion.

In other countries there would be other fruits growing high in the trees. These are the super foods that should be used as much as possible.

Thanks @esteemapp for your wonderful platform!

We always had apples stored as well and that is what we had for dessert :)

Hi @mariannewest. Apples are great. I don’t seem to eat them raw so much now but cook them into foods like apple crumble or chop some into a curry dish.

Hi Reheadpei, apples have to be my favourite fruit, I love them. How fantastic to live in a place where apple trees grow.

Hi Angie. Yes, apple are so good for you. I try to cook with them as much as possible. 😊
Have a great weekend!

Stewing green apples has always been a favourite pastime of mine. Forget cooking with tinned apples.

I’ve never used tinned apples either, Angie. For a pie I just use the natural apples and peel them. It’s a bit more work but worth it for the taste and probably nutrition.
Thanks for resteem !

Howdy redheadpei! I agree, I try to eat one everyday except usually they aren't organic so I have no idea what kind of pesticides and chemicals are in them.

I’m sure there are a lot of pesticides sprayed on them. I don’t know how much washing does to remove the chemicals. I peel the apples if I buy them at the store and usually make apple pie or apple crumble.

I read that you had to soak them for 15 minutes to get the chemicals off the skin but then you have whatever got inside too!
