The odd vase: A five minute freewrite
She sat there looking at the vase. It was the only decoration in the office. Somehow it appeared to be the most benign thing, yet so incredibly odd at the same time. In the stark room with white walls, black chairs and grey tile flooring, the colorful mosaic vase made little sense.
As the minutes passed, she wondered if she’d found the right place. The directions just said to go into the room and wait to be called for the interview. But she hadn’t seen or heard anyone since she arrived. There was one other door directly across from the one she came in, both black with black knobs. It would only take her about five steps to cross the room from one to the other.
Adjusting her legs she sat up straight as she could in the awkward chair and fought the urge to pull out her phone to pass the time. Without a window, magazines or anything else to look at she couldn’t help returning to the vase. And the weirdest thing was that each time she did, it looked like the mosaic pattern changed.
She blinked then decided to stare at one particular section of the vase. It was shades of purple and blue fading in and out of each other across the irregular pieces making up the mosaic. Her vision relaxed, and the vase blurred slightly. That’s when she knew she was right!
