Death and hunger: A five minute freewrite
This is a five minute freewrite based on the prompts delivered by @mariannewest.
The prompt today was 'hunger'
"I know you," he said. His voice was soft and confident. "I know why you're here, why you came back even knowing the cost."
I looked up at him from my knees, arms bound to my ankles behind me, "You know nothing."
An amused smiled crossed his lips as he turned and walked behind me. I heard the guards marching and the doors close. We were alone in the ceremonial spaces, the place they'd brought me to die.
With soft steps he circled back in front of me. The cold stone floor sent sparks of pain through my knees as I struggled to remain balanced upright.
"I know more than you think, young one. You hunger for it, ache to be near it, even if you know you can't have it. You'd rather die here than live a life feeling the empty pit that grew in your soul the moment you crossed the border."
I stared at the floor, silently trying to deny his words. But we both knew he was right. I died the moment I'd fled, and was reborn the moment I crossed the gates. It didn't matter if that life was short. I would happily die knowing there was no other choice.
"Will you admit it? Will you confess you'd rather die than live a life without it?"
There was no point in fighting, "Yes. I can't exist without it - I didn't until I returned. Kill me. I'm ready to face my punishment."
The tension on the ropes released and I dropped to the ground, my cheek caressing the cool stone.
"I don't understand," I said standing up to face the Master.
"Only those willing to face death are considered worthy to stay."
"But - "
"You were told what you needed to hear. Shown what you needed to see. Now, you will learn what you need to learn."

wow. You are such an amazing writer and i can't wait what you all will do in your Masters program!
Aww shucks. I have to admit that took more than 5 minutes. I'd say a little over 10 including distractions from a son who stayed up too late! But no excuses for going over time other than I wanted to capture the whole scene. I think this might be the start of something!
